All New 3 Series

I keep seeing ads about the "all new 3 series." It may be just me, but I don't see all that much that's "all new" about the 2011 3er. It looks, by and large, just like the ones from the past three years...In contrast, the 2011 5er looks like an "all new" car to me.

Am I missing something?

Welcome to the land of marketing.

How do you think it would work if they said, "The 2011 3-Series, same as it been the last five fricken' years."

And you're right in that the 5-series actually has been redesigned, the redesigned 3 should be out next year.

Well, sometimes tradition isn't a bad thing, why fix what isn't in need of repair? Like when you go to Brooks Brothers...or like a 911, which mostly, looks like it did 40 years ago...hydrogen powers the Sun, but it's not so good for powering cars (at least not yet)...

That said, I certainly had to chuckle upon reading your comment. It was funny.

I believe there is a certain threshold by law that the product must meet for them to call it all new. Since they are using the term in the commercials, I would assume they meet that threshold.

Most of the body panels on the coupe are new, and there is a new engine on the 335. Therefore, the car is all new (by BMW and marketing law standards).

As was mentioned before, the newly redesigned 3 series will be out next year but in the meantime marketing has to hit certain buzzwords so they changed the hood to make the car look "more aggressive" by adding "bolder lines" which "improve aerodynamics" and other meaningless upgrades. The car is largely the same but that's not such a bad thing when you consider what they're "improving" upon.

Believe me, I agree with you. I just meant that from a marketing perspective people sometimes need to be convinced that something was enhanced in order to justify the purchase.

There will actually be an "all new 3 Series" in about 2 years.
