opinion on extended warranty quote
Hi,
My local dealer finally got back to me with a quote on some extended warranty options. The car in question is a loaded 330i w/ step. The one that makes the most sense to me is the genuine BMW one, specifically the 2-year/100K miles option. It is the BMW Platinum plan, which is the highest level of coverage and appears to cover nearly everything the original 4-year warranty does. Anyway, the price is $3600 and there is a $50 deductible. This is about a thousand bucks more than I was hoping, but I do like that it's a BMW plan and not some fly-by-night company. My original warranty expires next Tuesday, so I have basically this weekend to decide if it's worth it. The car has been to the dealer quite frequently for various things, and I wouldn't be surprised if I've already reached $3600 worth of repairs (under warranty). What do you guys think? Appreciate any opinions... Cheers, Dave |

I looked into this but have a while before I need to make my decision. The most frequent price I received from the 20 or so dealers I contacted was:
A 7yr/100k Platinum coverage - $3900.00 A 7yr/100k Gold coverage - $3490.00 I have navigation so it makes sense to go with the Platinum. I plan to keep my car for at least seven years so I've decided to wait until about 36-40 months and see just how much warranty work has been done. If the car has been reliable I'll keep the $$ and spend at an indy shop as necessary. If I've been in for a lot of issues, I very well might buy the extended warranty. Good luck with your decision.

Strange, a seven year plan wasn't even one of the options I was offered. That sounds almost like overkill, if I'm honest. I was quoted 2, 3 and 4 year plans, with various mileages as well.
If you're getting such a similar price, but for 7 years instead of 2, I wonder if I should continue comparing prices. After all, a 330i can't be that much more expensive than a 328i, could it? I probably won't keep it for longer than another two though, and if I did, I'd certainly be past 100K by then anyway. So I settled on the 2-year/100K. I agree on the nav, it's my awfully buggy iDrive that made me decide on the Platinum as my best bet. |

I just looked up and they do offer 7 year 100,000 mile warranty. I am not sure since when but now they have 3 levels of extended warranty which are powertrain plus, gold and platinum.

If no codes are being thrown use Chevron Techron fuel injector cleaner (concentrate). It solves rpm fluctuating upon cold start-up. Also, for most BMW problems start off by scanning your car with the Peake Research Tool. It contains the actual BMW codes. If you want to register a newly installed battery for free (just buy a $10 cable) and google/download BMWLogger

Good link, thanks.
So this 7-year extended warranty implies that BMW is essentially guaranteeing their cars for 11 years?? That's insane. I can't even imagine keeping a car that long, I get bored and change roughly every 3 years. On top of that, you'd easily reach 100K miles before the 11 years are up. Well, at least the majority of drivers would. |

The seven years starts when the vehicle is first sold/titled...so a seven year warranty is actually an additional three years or 100k miles - whichever happens first.

I have the printout given to me by the dealership, and they are as above. To only cover to 70k is only $350 and $400 less, respectively. What I'm not understanding is I believe you can only get coverage as the original owner until 45 mos. and 45k. The OP stated his original warranty expires on Tue. Are we talking about the same thing? An easy way to do things is to have the dealership read the key, and give you the printout. |

Can anyone confirm this? At least then I'll have my answer, for better or for worse. Dealer finance person won't be back until Monday. (She was aware of my car's exact age & mileage, but I haven't told her I was the 2nd owner.) |

I have not had luck getting a discount, and have tried 4 dealerships. One told me (I know it's the car business) that they only make a few hundred on it, and make far more on 3rd party warranties. p.s. you don't have to go to that one dealership, you can go to any, the list prices will be identical.... |

Well if you have a leak in the vent hose in the EVAP system, like me, you'll have to pay $1700 for a $30 part to be replaced. I have the most "coverage" in terms of extended warranties...never again will I buy this bullshit plan.

My BMW replaced a Volvo S40 which I sold to my brother-in-law. He loves the car (as did I) but it just turned five years old and has needed multiple repairs since April...he is very thankful I purchased the Volvo warranty and convinced him to pay the $50 to transfer it. I shopped the across the country for the Volvo warranty and wound up getting about 45% off the MSRP...not too shabby and it's apparently paid for itself. That being said, the Volvo warranty was only about $1200 for 7/75k. Again, I'm new to BMW but I thought I read on one of the extended warranty threads that BMW changed their policy and the second owner can now buy the extended warranty. Also, you can get coverage after 45 months/45k miles but only the power train coverage. I could of course be dead wrong...
