Dealer beat the crap out of my car - How to pursue?
Hi folks as the title states I caught the techs fooling around in my car and tried to send the letter below to the service manager of the dealer. I haven't gotten a reply from him since Monday... How should i pursue this?
Hi ----, I wish I could have contacted you under better circumstances but I must bring something to your attention that happened at your dealership on Friday 6/4/10. Around 2PM I recieved a phone call from a friend, an employee at mobil, who identified my vehicle. He stated that he had just seen (2) of your employees hammering around in my car. The individuals sped into the mobil parking lot, screeching tires, when the driver got out of the car and went inside, later coming out with a few drinks. Upon leaving, the driver was on his cell phone and proceeded to floor it all the way up 9w back towards the dealership. I understand that a test drive was necessary after the repairs were done at the shop, but it didn't require anyone to put my property and/or themselves in danger. I bring my vehicle to ---------- because of my history with you, -----, and ----, but I'm going to seriously reconsider bringing my vehicle back. My repair bill came to $1,328, a very large chunk of cash for me, and the technician didn't even notice that my brake fluid light had come on, and was red, nor was any mention of that made to me. ----, I am so upset about this, I am considering sending a letter to BMWNA/NYSAG and filing a formal complaint. Again, out of respect for you I am going to refrain from doing that. I hope you can make this very displeasing experience at your shop better for me. |

You = Louisiana resident
Them/Dealership = BP Arco and the oil spill. They don't care. Really. You can complain all you want. First, realize that they get these type of complains ALL THE TIME. Some hypochondriac owner ALWAYS suspect their dealership mechanic doing something to molest their car. Whether it's true, believe you me, the service manager probably get about 10 of these calls a day. If you get a "I'm sorry, I'll look into this" then you're already more successful than 99.9% of the usual customer. Unless something was physically done with physical proof upon picking up the vehicle, or the porter crashing your car, nothing, and I repeat, absolutely NOTHING will come of it. Send your letter to BMW NA, take it to a different dealership. Do it if it makes you feel better. |

I have mixed feelings on the analogy as I own shares of BP, Transocean, and had the dealership put 210 miles on my car last time it was in. Any questions? LOL |

oh a technician at, I won't mention which dealer Ahem Rusnak Audi ahem, drove my friend's S4 Avant on the 134 at 110 mp and lost control, hit an SUV, and totaled the car. SO do pursue this! I wish you the best of luck. I caught a Valet driver in Vegas racing down the parking lot with my S/C E36 M3. When he stopped to hand me the keys, i said "fast car isn't it" he was like ahhhh ummm. I was about to kick his ass in front of his boss.

That totally sucks. I say send the complaint anyway because if your friend is a witness then it might help out a lot, especially since your letter was professional and respectful. For a high end car like a BMW you'd expect technicians to be more mature than that.
Best of luck to you, OP.

I would file a police report and have your friend as a witness. It is insane what some techs, porters, valet's, etc do. They dont own the cars or have the right to abuse them, when I was a porter I was easy on every car I did. I moved a cleaned a modded gt500 and got gas in it every day 3 miles away (bosses car who wanted shell 93) and I never once abused it or went wot. It was not mine to play with.
Take it to them, it is why I wait while my car gets serviced to be sure they dont take off and hit a pole.

If you sent a letter by snail mail, I wouldn't expect that it's been read yet. It may also be that he'll respond by letter which might take even longer. That said, if it were me, I'd follow up with a call or e-mail to the manager (e-mail addresses are available online for my local BMW dealer) in a week's time. I'd tell the manager that I had sent him a letter on June 7 and was following up as a courtesy to see if he had read the letter (copy the contents of the letter in your e-mail if you go the e-mail route). If you do e-mail or get voicemail, I'd also say, "if I don't hear from you by close of business tomorrow, I will assume that you've seen my letter and have nothing to say to me. This is not an issue that I am simply going to let slide, but at the same time, I don't necessarily want to take this issue to a broader audience if it is your intent to do something about it. As I said, I will wait to COB tomorrow for an acknowledgment of this e-mail and my previous letter to you."
At that point, you'll at least have a sense of where things stand. As a BMW owner, I hope you end up going to guns and getting BMWNA involved. I'm pretty outraged by your friend's description of events. |

You should've expressed your dismay in person. A letter/email can be ignored, a furious customer at the service desk can't be. Usually, it's not the tech beating on a car, it's the car jockey. All they're supposed to do is move the cars in and out of the service bays.

If you don't want to report it in person, send the letter registered mail, return receipt requested. That way you'll know whether it was delivered. Of course, that doesn't mean he'll read it, but very high chance he will under those circumstances. If nobody responds, go elsewhere for service and report it to BMWNA Customer Service.
Makes some of us with good dealer relationships feel very lucky...wish you the best on this one.

The best you can hope for is asking them to not do it again to your car. The car can take that kind of abuse and since there is no actual damage done, there isn't legally anything you are entitled to.

Wow. That is terrible. I have experience working with dealers on the inside for all types of cars, I have to say I have heard many stories about porters racing cars on the freeway and crashing customer's cars.
Pursue this with BMWNA, the dealer will probably deny this ever happened. In fact, I'd say contact BMWNA RIGHT NOW. You don't need to put up with this crap.

My techs know me and let ask if I want to ride along if they test my car out. They still thrash it, but I'm in it so I know that it isn't just a couple of young techs out on a joy ride.
