I hope this isn't just the beginning :(

I really hope this isn't just the beginning for an onset of problems with my e92.

I got a 2007 328i coupe...

The other day I got in my car like usual, un-locked the doors, put my key in, and my start button wouldn't work.....

Got my car towed to the dealership, theyre saying the "CAS" unit or "cradle" where the keyfob plugs into is shot... how the fuck does this just happen out of the blue? I'm so upset, im looking at paying $1058.00 plus taxes for fix... I can only imagine the next thing to go wrong

Any advice?

I'm surprised your warranty doesn't cover this.

Sorry to hear about the busted up CAS unit.

That's the price you pay for a used car. Yes, it saves you money from the get-go, but that saved money is more of a gamble to the history of the car more than anything.

Can you just order the part from Tischer and have an import shop do the install? Might save a few hundred. Dealerships will almost always rape you. I hear Aonarch likes being raped...just not by dealerships.

I just paid $80 for an alignment at a good tire shop. Dealer wanted $199.

My neighbor just paid for his second Honda transmission.

Mechanical things, in this case "cars", take maintenance. How much is a roll of the dice. And when you really look at the numbers thrown out by the various "consumer" services it is clear that the difference between brands is noise.

Educate yourself. Understand risk. Find a good garage (good, not "cheap"). The rest is life.

I forgot about that angle. Since I put about 5000 miles on my car each year, I continually forget that people actually drive their cars more than I do.

Doubtful. I am sure a part like this has to be "registered" with the car and will require the dealer's computer...

Apparently the CAS module is considered the "ignition"

and it's the one thing on my warranty that's not covered

fuck my life

I understand the pointer from the dude saying, if you cant afford the maint, dont buy the car... this is not the case, I can afford this 1100.00 fix, however, I would much rather spend this money on modding the car, rather then continuing its operation.... this is just so frustrating.

So true... And with the cars we drive, the gamble seems to favour the house more than usual.

On the bright side at least you don't have to worry about the HPFP taking a shit on you.

If I did, I'd have 100 more horsepower to at least, ease the pain a little

I'd take it to a good BMW specialist indy shop and see what they say, might be out of luck though if its related to the key.

What sort of warranty do you ahve that doesn't cover the ignition? that sounds odd.

I'm guessing it's a 3rd party warranty, and not a CPO?

they won't do it due to the fact that BMW dealers use sandbags to offset the weight, and Firestone don't have sandbags. I already asked

I'd contact BMW NA because that, to me, is not the ignition, it's a Key Slot!

The 328 is a nice car. Practical approach to maintaining 3-series is the same as with any other car. If it is clear what has to be replaced, (1) find out how much the part costs at the dealer, (2) find out an independent shop that would install it. You probably want to find a reliable independent shop anyway. In this specific case, the cost may depend on whether you have a regular access fob or the comfort access. Be cautious, because the fob mates with the CAS, which is fairly complex and the faulty socket may have to be installed by the dealer. I had car access problem on the 330xi, which turned up to have been caused not by the socket but by by an intermittent failure in one of the CA fobs, and the fix was fairly complex. The CAS is designed to discourage car theft, and I believe that for some manipulations involving CAS, the dealer has to go to BMW AG. The security seems to work because we do not hear about too many stolen BMWs, but it may be that car access and security system problems may be beyond the scope of things an independent repair shop can do. I believe there are people who work for independent shops on the forum, and they would chime in if I were wrong.
