Top off oil or leave it alone?
Hi-
My oil indicator says I'm less than 3/4 full. I'm at 11290 miles and have yet to have my first oil change or scheduled service maintenance since purchasing the car in late March, 06 Display says I'm not due for service until 8000 miles, 8/2007 That can't be correct, right? Heard I shouldn't top off oil. But uncomfortable with any levels being less than normal. Advice? Take her in and pay for an oil change? DIM?

I'm not quite sure, but I think that until it hits the MINIMUM, you are fine. Consider it a reserve - that it doesn't have to be on MAX FULL. Once it gets close to MIN, just take it in and ask them to top you up - its free.
I know what you mean though, i was like 2 knotches down on the iDrive Oil level display and it kept bothering me. Luckily, i bought it a year ago, and they owed me my 1 year oil change... it drives so much smoother after that 1st oil change, i don't knwo if it's all in my mind or the change is real! ENJOY! |

The engine oil graph is for 1 quart. Until it goes below the "min" mark, you don't need to add oil, at which point, you add 1 quart.
To be clear, the car fits 7 quarts (6.5L) of oil. When the scale is at the halfway point, it means it's a half-quart low, not 3.5 quarts low. Also - I should add that I just got an oil change at 4500 miles (paid out of pocket). My "break-in" oil change. It made no difference in how my car drives. Maybe if I'd waited a full year to do it, I would have noticed a difference. But my car was great before, and is great after. OTOH, there is a big difference in how I feel about it -- I was getting anxious to change the oil and couldn't wait a year for the first oil change on a new car.

My dealer does not want to cover the oil addition.... meaning i have to cover it on my own... checked it with another dealer and i had the same response... oil change is free, but oil addition might cost us money. However, I see in the forums that nice dealers might actually don't charge anything for it.

They have to add it for free. We have free service. That doesn't mean they need to add it when it says 3/4 though. It only means they have to add when it says min.
