335is.. at 1800 miles.. LOVE IT!

Just turned up 1800 miles. Took delivery 4 weeks ago and still am lovin gthe car.

The one thing that stands out is the exhaust note. Starting up in the garage is a good way to wake the whole house. "POP POP POP" on decel

Brief history. I had a 2008 E93 Sapphire Black/sadde, until the roof began to leak. After 5 plus visits and a creation of a new leak it was trade assisted and a 335is was ordered. I had planned to get an M3, the next step up from the 335i, but the E93 335is was more the car that I "needed" than an M3 convertible..

So far there have been no problems... well a nail in the rear tire at 300 miles and a whistleing driver's side mirror (may be a problem with the new 2011/LCI mirrors) no complaints.

Differences noted compared to the 2008:

1. Windows to do rise at the end of lowering the roof..
2. The Nav is far better.. but I know this also having a 2010 X5
3. HVAC control is different and that is no second DVD slot for the NAV Disk
4. Loss of the chrome trim on the seat back ....

Options:

Premium Pack
Smart Phone
COnv. Pack (Pdc, alarm, CA)
Active Steering
Auto High Beams
H/K Stereo
Ipod
Cold Pack
Sat Radio
Navigation

Comments on the options:

Active Steering.. getting to like it.. it is odd at first.. very quick at low speed and coming out of garage...
Conv Pack: CA and PDC are must.. alarm is almost a freeby
Auto High beams... too sensitive, and slow.. street lights will tigger it off..
Smartphone: you lose 60% of the storage. barely fit an ink pen .. have to stand them up.. Will NOT GET again. It is fine in my X5 where the storeage bin is huge...

Nav: finally upgraded to be very useful.. The input of address is intuitive.. you speak it as you would read it..

Overall there is little to really comment on the change from the 2008.

Power.. Just now getting to let loose. and she goes....

The Auminum trim has grown on me and the "335is" badge is not the bad.. still wish it gone. The Aluminum dents and scuffs easily.. not a recommended trim...

Mileage is 25-28 on the hightway.. 19 about town

Awesome, it's great you're enjoying the car. I want one. And I love the color combo you've got.

Can't wait to get mine. I'm a little nervous about the smart phone now and that's what I thought would happen to the high beams so I skipped it.

I will get you picture of the storage bin with the Smartpahone..

NOTE: just having the iPod cable plugged into the USB and AUX input diables the use of the iPod fuction of the iPhone in the cradle.. you have the storage the iPod cable, which DOES charge the iPhone..

Garage List
2022 BMW X3  [9.83]
2015 BMW M3  [6.50]
If the 335is badges are the same as the model script on the trunklid, dental floss (carefully applied behind each letter/number) will ease them off. Follow up with a little solvent to remove any residual adhesive, then apply some polish/wax to finish up.

VERY nice ride! I had heard they were going to delete the fogs on the IS to allow for more airflow...is the E93 exempt from that?

What don't you like about active steering? It's one of my favorite options! Gorgeous car!

Wut? Can you elaborate on this some more.

e92 = no fogs. E93 has them.

So, j33xi-
Did you get the M-DCT or the 6MT? If you got the M-DCT, how do you like the power delivery? I used to have an 08 M3 with DCT, and I wasn't too happy with the gear selection sometimes. For example, if you are slowing down to take a corner at about 15 - 20 MPH and apply medium acceleration out of the curve, it would sometimes "jerk" into gear hard, as it was confused about gear selection.

I got the Manual.. I am a manual driver for 30 years .... even had a manual X5 (2001) and several people commented how smooth my shifting was etc...

Drove my friend's Boxster S with the Porsche PDC (aka DCT) and was not impressed enough to go Dual Clutch.. I am 70% plus highway driving.. On the track DCT is superior.. no wrong gear selection, over rev'ing, unbalancing rough engagements etc.. DCT rules. BUT for fun "motoring" the manual is cool.. PLUS I can push in the clutch and blip the throttle in the parking garage..

windows?

Not sure I understood your comments about the windows. Do they rise automatically after the roof is lowered like on the 2008 (at least mine do), or do they just stay down?

How do you find the 335is seats/interior quality etc compared to your 2008 e93? I feel my 08 e93 is better than my 09 e90 in this regard.

Thanks for the update!
I'm especially interested in you're comments concerning Smartphone. I have an iphone and was thinking Smartphone to be a no-brainer. Maybe I should reconsider.

I totally agree, it's really about what you like. I like having a clutch too. And that includes bumper to bumper traffic. And my comparison (since our household doesn't have an auto) is the E90 328i x-drive steptronic that I had for 8 days--in heavy traffic, I had to keep a pretty solid foot on the brake. If I owned that car, I would feel that the tranny is getting a beating from having to slip while the foot is on the brake. The car would go pretty fast imho with no gas at all, requiring the brakes to hold it back in traffic.

They DO NOT rise at the end of the lowering sequence.. My 2008 DID rise..

the 2011 only rises at the end of the roof up sequence..
