This is very annoying and the reason I don't use automatic door lock. I carry people in the back and they pull the handle like crazy if it doesn't open the first time. My Renault Megane opens on first pull regardless if the doors are locked or not. Much more convenient...

It's a safety feature I believe. First time unlocks the door, second time opens it. Prevents children and/or your dumb friends from opening the door accidentally. If it's that much of a hassle just unlock all the doors when you arrive via the center dash button.

Most of my passengers instinctively pull the handle again when the first time doesn't "work".

Sometimes I worry that my passangers are going to rip them off. Everytime I have someone in my car, right as I turn my car off I say "Pull it twice"- they look at me funny at first but understand while they pull the handle.
+1 to the above.. |

remoteKEY+ actually defeats the double-locking issue you're reporting.

BMW has always done that and I like it. Its safer and It was the same on my E36 - 328IS
I don't think its even close to an issue..hit the unlock or change the programming through your dash board to not lock the doors while in motion, then hopefully ALL your passengers will fall OUT, the car gets lighter and vrommmmmm U GO!! Just kiddin' dude... |

Obviously he only got the door cracked open a little bit, but it was enough to scare the shit out of me and pull off the side of the highway.

[sarcasm] Actually, airbags are the dumbest feature BMW has ever put on their cars![/sarcasm] Holy crap, people....it's a double-lock safety feature so that the doors will not accidentally open in a collision situation if significant damage is sustained by the doors! Either unlock the doors with the central locking button, or let the passengers do the double pull. Would you want to risk passengers potentially being ejected from your car if you're ever in a sever accident and the door latch released? There's a reason that BMWs are well known for integrity of the car's safety cage, and the doors and the double-locking latches are a big part of it.
