question about 335i steptronic

ok so here is the deal, i am used to driving manuals and my last car was an e46 SMG II....

due to some physical ailments, i am not able to drive manuals anymore for long periods of time, so i decided to pick up a 335i m-sport with power kit steptronic.

the question i have is that when i am driving the car in manual mode (not in sport), how can i keep the car in manual without it shifting into automatic by itself?

if anybody can help me out it would be appreciated.

thanks.

If you are just in D, you can shift using the paddles but it goes back to automatic. Just move the lever into sport and then shift using the paddles. Now, your in manual until you move the lever again. Or if you don't have paddles shift using the stick, you get it.

Thats true, if you keep it in S automatic then it eats up gas. But once you shift into manual mode, your in control of the gears and can shift when you want. Its not shifting itself anymore, so you can shift at low rps to save gas. Its not like it stays automatic sport mode.

Sport mode keeps the rpms up. But manual mode lets you change gears whenever you want and the trans will not change gears for you unless you get into a danger zone.

When in sport mode, it won't shift into 6th gear on the highway, that's probably why you're getting the fuel consumption. Just use the paddles, and it's fine.

awesome.. thanks guys... i appreciate it.

so the only difference between d and s is that the s leaves the rpm's higher, so if i mash the throttle whether in d or s it will have the same fuel consumption?

i remember in my e46 m3, the sport button opened up the throttle body which lead to poor gas mileage, its not the same with this?

Correct. D and DS will yield the same result in a straight line with the throttle mashed. Also contrary to popular belief, D and DS shifts are the same speed. DS shifts later, and generally keeps you 1 gear lower than D would be in at the same speed.

Nope, it's not adjustable like the DCT. It is what it is.

Seriously? The shift time for ZF-made 6AT is rather quick, and no other cars that I have driven can come close. It's one of the best out there.

well coming from an smg II m3, the shifts for that car were pretty damn quick. i'm not saying the shifting is slow for the step... i was just curious if there is a way to make it faster.
