can the steering wheel lock light come on while driving?
i was drving and a light came on for only a second. It was a circle with a lock next to it..when i looked in the manual the closest thing to it was the steering wheel locks image.
I bought the car used (its an 06 325xi) and the steering wheel column was never replaced. Im wondering if it could be the common steering column locks issue. And if so, could it jam up while driving or does it only always happend from a stop right when you turn on the car? The light was on for just a second, so im hoping it was a fluke glitch. Thanks! |

Yes, it the steering wheel lock malfunction light has been reported to come on while driving. For some people, it has stayed on, and for others, it was on and then turned off, just like in your case. It could be a sensor or software issue, but in all likelihood it's related to the steering wheel lock issue common to the cars that had the lock (the 06 and half the 07 models).
I think I recall reading it is physically impossible for the lock to actually engage while the engine is running, so I wouldn't worry about that too much. But having seen the error, you should get your steering wheel lock looked at. The error code should be stored in the car's memory even though it won't show up on "check control messages," so the tech will see it.
