long cranking.....

So, my 335 is having some issues getting started from time to time. Over the past 1-2 months, the car has has to crank for a few seconds to get started. Sometimes it only takes a couple seconds. Sometimes it takes 5 or more seconds. I'm getting a bit concerned that there may be something wrong with the ignition system or the HPFP. I was going to take it into the dealership to get it looked at but was concerned that the car would start right up for them (maybe with a 2-3 second delay) and they would say it is normal. But, it is those days when I try to start it and it takes 5-10 seconds to start that really concern me.

BTW, my car is a 2009 model with 20K miles.

Any guesses as to what is going on here? Thanks!!

its the pump - long cranks should trip codes so they will see and fix most likely.

Definitely the HPFP. They shouldn't need much explanation for them to change it, just tell them long cranks at start up and they should change it out no problem.

It feels like a day doesn't pass without someone mentioning a HPFP failure.

I just dropped my car off at the dealer this morning for this same problem. I hope that it threw a code so that they could change it cause i know sooner or later it's gonna fail.

They should change the software to the latest release and you should be good to go. Your HPFP is probably fine. BMW was needlessly changing out HPFP's when in a lot of cases the software fix would have been sufficient. I got the new software 2 months ago, and have not had a long crank since.

Yup. Software just regulates the pumps usage so it doesn't overexert itself. Should be good to go, should that be the case and that's what they decide to do.

hpfp until proven otherwise. if you're using any gas with ethanol in it, try switching to one with no ethanol---ie shell or bp....

Update: So, we got the car back from the dealer last Thursday. According to them, it just needed a software update. Car started up right away the first few times after pick-up. Now we are noticing a slightly longer crank here and there followed by a slightly rough idle at startup. Going to call the dealer now to see what they have to say.

Well technically, the software update is supposed to have fixed that issue It may be a sensor. Let us know, OP.

Dealer Instructions for customer complaining of long crank
1) Blame software
2) Update said software and send customer on their way
3) Pray it works for once fully expecting to see customer within 30 days to replace HPFP
4) Apologize to customer when software update doesn't work, give in, and replace hpfp.

Update: Talked to the service advisor today and he said that when the car was in last time, they were getting a misfire on cylinder 1 and that was the reason for the rough idle after startup. I mentioned to him that there was a slightly long crank here and there still and that the rough idle issue has returned. Today after we started up the car it started idling really rough and sounded like the engine was going to completely cut out on us, it then picked up and started smoothing out. I'm no auto tech, but my intuition tells me that the motor wasn't getting enough fuel at startup. Anyway, my advisor still thinks it is a misfire issue and so we made an appointment to bring the car back in on Monday. Will post another update when I find out more.

Were you informed of the misfire causing the rough idle the first time you were returned the car? My E46 had the same problem of a seriously rough idle after startup, although it did lack two turbos Turned out to be a cracked head gasket and cylinder leak. Cylinder issue sounds possible.

Dont mean to hijack your thread, but just a quick question..
How does the software update for the hpfp work if youre out of warranty? I know the hpfp is covered, but I have an 07 with an aftermarket bumper to bumper warranty. As far as I know, software isnt covered. So If the dealers see that an update is needed because of the hpfp, is that also covered? If not how much should I be looking to spend?

Why wouldn't the software be covered if it is required to regulate the pump usage?

I guarentee BMWNA has instructed the dealers to never assume HPFP and only replace if it is MANDATORY, bc they have a class action law suit on it right now and it doesnt help when more and more of them keep popping in the dealer
