first 328i, bad gas mileage???

Hi,

I just bought a 2007 328i sedan. Love the drive and the look but wondering if what I"m experiencing is normal... I live in West Hollywood, CA, my average driving speed in the city is about 14 mph and my MPG is around 10!!!! Is that possible? I am using hi test gas. I brought it to the dealer and they said it was fine. I find this pretty awful if that is really the way it is. Wondering if other v6's are this way, like G37 or Audi ? thoughts?

Also, I'm scared to death to hit a pothole or rough road because I've been told my tires are sensitive. Sounds odd for a sports vehicle. I don't have the sport package.

Thanks!

That sounds a little low

A/C on
Stop and Go traffic
will kill your gas mileage

sounds like traffic around you is really really bad. I do 95% highway driving on my 07 328xi and I get 27.5mpg. However, during the city portion, it's around 20mpg. The run flats are really rough compare to other cars I've had and I'm always on the look out for potholes . . .

i came from an 08 G35 with sports package, staggered setup and I can tell you the steering isn't as solid as the 3 series on the highway but it gives more cushioning around bumps and potholes

That sounds really low, but if you are spending a lot of time in stop and go traffic and in low gears its possible. Next fill up, reset the MPG gauge and do some highway miles as well... see where you stand. My 06 325i get above 30 mpg on the highway. City seems to average about 19 and sometimes higher, but a decent amount of my city is actually moving, not stop and go, 1st to second and back, 0-15mph traffic jam type stuff like you guys get in LA.

You can also train yourself to drive more "eco" by watching the instant MPG meter on the lower right, although if you have an automatic you don't have quite as much wiggle room.

Which transmission do you have? The inline 6's are pretty dismal around town though, no matter how you drive. I get about 12 mpg on my 335i in San Francisco's hills and traffic, and I can just imagine LA is as bad or worse.

If you have a manual, try keeping it in lower gears and the RPMs up around 3k, if you can. It's counter-intuitive, I know, but those engines get better MPG as the torque curve improves. You can see it on the road, as well. They get better mileage at 75-80 than they do at 55!

With the twin-turbo motor, it doesn't help as much, the torque comes on very fast. In-town is just bad, no matter what you do.

Something wrong. Needs some tune-ups.

330i with 57k miles, heavy driving, 70/30% (city/highway) = 20mpg on average.
I swear my mpg meter is lying on me..

I used my tripometer and I average on this tank of gas 12.6 Miles per hour and 10.5 Miles per gallon. I took it to the dealer and they sort of looked at me like "oh well" and said it is what it is. Just wondered if anyone else is getting these dismal numbers. The air filter is new. This is literally a 2 week old after I bought it CPO so it just had all tune ups etc. Should I go back and question this dealer???

I have to say that given your low speeds, especially if you are spending a lot of time at idle, your MPG is probably within allowable limits. I'm currently averaging 43.6 in a '07 328i and getting 28.3 mpg.
