335d: What is a good mpg for semi-conjested traffic??
I reset my avg MPG and avg MPH a few days ago to see what I'd get in semi-conjested traffic. Mainly in 25 - 35mph zones. Anyhow, I ended up with an avg of 17.8MPG with an avg speed of 16.7MPH. Seems a bit low for me, but once I get on the freeway, a 60MPH avg would get me close or more than 40MPG. My usual combined MPG is roughly 23-26MPG with an avg speed for 26-30MPH.

mine never went below 27mpg but then lowest was at 31mph of avg on tank. I usually reset after every fillup. Just like yours on highway it shoots beyond 37. But once when I was in NY City I was driving through complete stop and go and avg dropped from 38 to 29.

If you are in a lot of stop and go traffic, the 23 mpg city number that is published is going to be a little hard to achieve. My last tank was mostly LA city, traffic lights, stop and go, and I got 23mpg. On tanks of pure LA stop and go, it can drop lower..I've seen 20mpg, although I did engage in quite a few heavy throttle launches to enjoy the torque. Granted, my older 335i would get me around 13-14 in stop and go, so I'm still up a good 30 or 40 percent!

I have never been below about 34mpg no matter how I drive. In mixed driving its about 34-36mpg. On freeway below 65mph its about 40-42mpg, up at 70mph its down to about 38-39mpg.

I wish...
I do get great economy on the highway. 42mpg is achievable at 62 mph. But I have trouble breaking above 23mpg around town. The engine is remarkably efficient in 6th gear on the highway. But around town, it falls off. Uses just a little fuel at idle, though so I don't see numbers in the teens much at all. I've heard the milage improves over the miles.

I saw this tread before but I thought I would hold off until I collected more data.
I have had my car for 2 months now and I too had pretty bad fuel consumption at the beginning during the break-in period. I was initially getting ~12L/100km (19.6MPG) in very light footed city driving and marginally better in mountainous highway driving up to Whistler (~9.8L/100km or 24.0MPG). I am now getting ~9.0L/100km (26.1 MPG) in the city and the best I have achieved so far is 6.25L/100km (37.6MPG) on mostly highway and some city driving. All of these figures were determined by manually calculating the L/100km values and not via the iDrive. Based on what I have read, it seems like diesel cars take longer to break-in and during the initial break-in period, the fuel consumption may not be as good as one expects. However, I think my car was a little bit worse at the beginning. |

^ How many miles/km did it take you to see an improvement?

Air conditioning and driving style can have a big effect. I get about 22 mpg in my little city, about 30mph average. But I am a glider and avoid AC. On the highway I can get about 30 mpg at 75mph. But this is in a 335i, not a 335d.
We won't see really eye-popping fuel efficiency numbers until BMW AG decides to override BMW USA dealer resistance to the 320d.

How about 47mpg cruising at 65mph. Or 42 with 50% rural and 50% highway driving. That's what I managed when I went to pick a friend up from the airport this weekend, on what ended up being about a two hour drive. I'd say that's pretty eye-popping for any car, let alone one that's as quick as the 335d. The numbers we'll be seeing when cars like the 320d step ashore will be beyond eye-popping.

What's funny is that I started to see an improvement soon after the initial break-in period (~2000km). At ~4000km, I am currently getting ~9.7L/100km (24.2MPG) in city driving so again, better than my initial 12L/100km. This is with no AC usage and gliding whenever possible. I have heard that diesel engines take longer to break-in so I hope as I reach 10,000km and higher, my fuel consumption gets even better.
At the time, I also changed to Shell V-Power diesel but I don't think that should make too much of a difference. |
