DIY: LED licence plate lights (Version 2)

Hi,

I have just changed my LED licence lights to a more simple set up

For your information, please refer to the link below for what I did few months ago

http://www.e90post.com/forums/showth...&highlight=LED

For the old LED I was using, I found it is kind of blue and the brightness is not good enough. So, I switched to these LED lights.

From another model of this brand, I found these adaptor which is fitted with a 270Ohm resister inside.

However, these adaptor (w/ 270 Ohm resister) is NOT designed to be used with the 6 LED.

Since our E90 licence plate light is connected in parallel, using one adaptor at each light will use you around 135 Ohm. This will still trigger the error message.

We only need to drop the resistance a little bit to make it work. I added a metal foil resister in the left housing.

here is the right housing....by the way, I have cut the black square plastic piece off since it is blocking half of the lights

Here is the result...

the lights are more white and brighter. A more simple setup with no more wires.

Just compared with a drive-by GS300, the color is the same. The only difference is the brightness, mine is actually much brighter than the GS300. Maybe I shouldn't cut off that plastic piece in the housing.

Anyway....will try it with another set of housing next week.

Hi Analog....your LED interior is very nice. May I know how many LEDs are you using in the dome light?

Do you find the 12 LED bright enough for the interior in person? My friends tried using the Luxer1-brand 12 LED, but it is not bright enough. They are now using the 24LED version of the same brand, and it can light up the whole cabin.

Hi:
I think the 12 LED is not as bright as the halogen bulb. But i think it is good enough for me. I was trying to buy the Luxer in the states, but I had no luck finding it.

The question is how do the smaller resistors, one in the festoon and one that you soldered as a piggyback, dissipate heat as compared to the three externally mounted aluminum resistor housings that your previously used? I like the simple approach, yet the smaller resistors and no heat sink are a vast difference from your prior mod.

The two small resister inside the adaptor will get hot. However, it is still not as hot as a halogen bulb. The piggyback one is not even warm since it has a much lower resistance.

In my previous approach, the 37mm 6-LED bulb was the only thing I can find at that time. Adding three resisters needs more space, so I used heat shink resister because I will be hiding it inside the trunk.

Now with this new LED adaptors, there are already 2 resisters built-in. So, no need to worry about the heat, because you won't touch it as you won't touch the stock halogen bulb. Adding a third one is much easier.

around how much will it cost to just replace the license plate lights?
and whats the difference between the 2 setups..the one from superbrightleds and the luxor1? just the brightness..?cuz the luxor one setup is about 3 times more expensive than the suprebrightleds one..sorry for the dumb question but im not sure i got the idea right

The luxer1 LED is much more expensive (US$20 vs US$6 each), and they brighter too. It looks more like the Lexus GS's licence light than the Superbright LED which I used before.

I saw the 6 LED unit on their web site but where did you get the adapter from? What product line? It looks like the package you have in the first post comes with it included... is that the one I need to buy (entire package) so it comes with the adapter?
Thanks

thanks for the write up!

so are you saying the resistor (inside the festoon bulb) that comes with the kit is not good enough? and that using what comes with the kit alone will still result in bulb out error?

Just did this mod. After 10 minutes switched back to regular license bulbs for now. I have more LED's on order. The first ones I used were just like yours.
WAY too blue. They seemed bright enough, but so blue it puts me at risk of getting pulled over!!

I have two more sets coming, in different styles, so I'll see which one I like best. One is a 9 LED bulb (vs. 6), the other is a 1 watt high power. I'll keep you posted.
