335 vs smart car

I have a quick question for everyone on this forum. Lets say a 335i is going 60mph into a wall, and a smart car is also going 60mph into a wall. Which one is going to get the worst of it? Please provide some proof.

Thanks

A smart car will explode into smithereens if you hit a wall at 60mph hahaha

I thought that the frame of a Smart is so rigid, that it doesn't give way (crumple) at all, and the passenger was the one to explode into smithereens (if the force overcomes the airbags). I remember seeing some video where it just bounced off a barrier

Found this article.
http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/24599768/

It gets high marks for it's size, but larger cars (especially with the same ratings) will be safer.

...it's science

Here's a start. The IIHS 40 mph offset.

E90
http://www.iihs.org/ratings/rating.aspx?id=561

Smart
http://www.iihs.org/ratings/rating.aspx?id=937

Both recieved the highest rating of "Good", although the E90's was overall better.

you could probably look up the frontal crash ratings for each car to determine occupant safety. The BMW has 4 star ratings for both driver and passenger in frontal collisions, and the Smart has a 4 star rating for the driver, and 3 star rating for the passenger.

Driver and passenger side ratings show 5 stars for the bmw in both, and 5 stars for the Driver only in the Smart, but there is an asterisk that notes a safety concern for the smart, and for some reason the passenger side was not tested. "Examples of a safety concern may include (but are not limited to) structural failure or non-intended performance of vehicle components"

So, with that info, I'd rather be in a BMW than a smart. Besides, I don't think crashing into stationary objects is the real concern with a smart car. Anyone who has taken a physics class knows they wouldn't want to be in a smart car vs suburban fight. There was some videos a while back where they crashed a smart car head on with a mercedes C class, and it wasn't pretty. the smart car was punted. I can only imagine what would have happened to it if they crashed it into an SUV.

Smart cars are rock solid, it will be fine, but you will not be. Think closed head injury.. with the head being the Smart.

There is only one difference: the lower deceleration speed due to the crumple zones in the e90. In the e90 (or any good large sedan) the occupant's body decelerates at a certain rate when hitting a wall while the front engine bay is compressed. In a Smart, the deceleration is much quicker and the possibility of organ damage is higher.

From my viewpoint, years in the 'fall arrest' industry, it depends.... the impact energy has to be dissipated. So the 'capacity' in the crumple zones to decelerate the 'mass', of either sized car, and control the peak forces inside the safety cell, will determine which car is best. Also the way the human body mass can be decelerated inside the cell, will also have a part to play in what is the 'softer' stop for the human body. Time and distance are key factors which makes the longer object (inside and outside the safety cell) more suited to reducing the forces on the body.

I think there are IIHS videos of an offset frontal crash test with a shmaht cah and a C-class. it was gruesome!!!! I think people look like freakin' clowns in those things!
