e90 oil report -change at service indicator

found this...

on an '06 330i... Basically the oil is in horrible shape, and the reports says it possibly has caused engine damage...

My 335i will be getting its oil changed at 1500 miles, and then every 5000 or so miles... I dont want that crud in my oil!

anyone else think this is a problem?

that said "bordering on damage conditions" and those a parts per million a difference of a few PPM doesn't seem like that much of a big deal to me

I'm not horribly concerned

note how to read that chart too

it's not saying there is excessive .... wear

it's saying the levels of that particular element are excessive, then telling you where it's from

it looks like the guy waited until 19,000 miles and 18 months but the oil should have been changed at 15,000 or 12 months. maybe that would have made a differnce.

yeah, but you get a free change at 12 months, doesn't matter for far you've driven

so the guy was overdue for the service even by BMW's extended service guidelines by 6 months

One thing they didn't mention is that the on board computer can change the oil change interval based on how long and hard the engine is driven. Although the change is too substantial it can very anywhere from 12000 to 15000 last I checked. But what do I know. I'm not a BMW tech...

My car still says 15K to the free oil change. I have nearly 4500 miles on the car right now.

there are lots of threads on this ... bottom line, why do people fret over a DYI $40 oil change when they spent 40K+ for a car? If it is a lease that is one thing, but changing oil is simple and good common sense. Synthetic will get dirty just like any dino oil ... the cleaner the oil, the less wear on the engine ... simple.

15,000 -19,000 miles setting is bs, but I wouldn't change oil at 5000 miles either, but 7,000-10,000 (or half of the factory indicator). I had an Accord before and changed oil (honda oil, non synthetic) at every 5000 miles. It ran very quite for 100kmiles until I got it totaled in an accident. For synthetic oil, I would say 7,000-10,000 mile oil change is about right.

Well, these days most people don't have the facilities to change the oil themselves (I no longer do). I remember when I was in a kid and could change the oil on my '65 Mustang by just sliding under the car and dumping the used oil at the local mechanic.

Today, I'd have to buy ramps, and then have to convince my spouse that it's an easy DIY.

OK, my dealer charges $82 for an oil change ... small change when considering the cost of buying a BMW and if you do it evey 5K miles or so.
