question for e90 owners: lights

I want to know what the car looks like with the daytime running lights on. I'm guessing it's just the angel eyes in the front, but what about the back? Do those three horizontal lights light up? Also, can you set the daytime running lights option in Idrive or does it have to be done by the dealer? thanks.

Welcome Harold, here's what the daytime running lights look like (with angel eyes). This is forum member mt-330's car.

Thanks for the photos. Just to make sure: if you look at the bottom photo, it looks like there are three yellow stripes lit up in the tail lights. Are those lit during the day as part of the daytime running lights? Personally, I think the rear looks really cool with those lights lit up that way. Anyone agree?

Yes, I agree haroldho, the way the rear lights look when lit up is really nice, I like it!!

I'm beginning to like the rear of the E90 even more. I never hated it, but I always preferred the front and the side profiles.

I read somewhere, can't recall where, that a BMW rep actually said the rear lights on the sedan are LED they just dont look it as much.

There's much misinformation out there, plus I don't exactly trust bmw reps regarding the e90 yet. I've heard of too many not really knowing what they're talking about. I even read where one salesperson didn't know where the new toolkit is located (under cloth in small compartment at the right side of trunk). Shouldn't these people know the in and out of the cars they're selling? Armen52 you may be right about the LED's, but just letting people know that there's still a lot of wrong/unconfirmed information floating around.

I agree, I like how they resemble the rear of the facelifted E39!

I looked at a 330i today. I didn't drive it since mine will be in next week anyway, but I did start it and turn the lights and signals on. With just the engine running and the light switch in the auto position, only the halos were on. The tail lights do not light up. With the light switch turned fully on, the xenons came on, the halos were on, and the three horizontal stripes in the rears lit up. I don't think any other light other than the horizontal stripes came on. When I turned on a turn signal, the horizontal stripes remained lit and the upper outside quadrant of the assembly blinked red. Since I was by myself I couldn't observe the brake lights, but I have seen those in the smarter section of BMW's 3 site. The whole bottom half of the light assembly is the brake light with half coming on during regular braking and the full width coming on during heavy braking. If any of this light assembly is LED, I think it would be the horizontal stripes, but I'm not sure. The turn signal is obviously not LED. I think for daytime running lamps the halos can also be supplemented with the smaller inner halogen headlamp (not the outer xenons) by dealer adjustment or i-Drive adjustment.

I was wondering if the DRL is the angel eyes or like the other BMWs (e46)where the high beam light is on (in the power saving mode though)?

It's all about being low-profile. I'd rather blend in with traffic, rather than be identified with the signature ange-eyes.

Wait, so if you don't have adaptive xenon headlights, they're not the angel eyes? They don't look like the 330i?

I'm not sure about the DRL's, but on my '06 330i the both the low and high beams are the HID lights (outside ones), and the inner lights (that would traditionally be high beams) are strickly "flash to pass" lights.

I suppose for DRL's the inner "Flash to pass" lights could be used in lower intensity mode.
