Holding out for 2nd year of production
Are you worried about 1st year production bugs?
I am after talking to a BMW Tech of 20 plus years. I think I'll wait it out a bit and see what happens. |

I formerly owned a 2001 330Ci (first year) and while it was not a nightmare it certainly had it share of visits to the dealer. My insurance Company (USAA) even recommends purchasing the 2nd year of production. |

Version 1.0
BMW stands by it's products.
Even though there well might be a few bugs in v. 1.0, I have NO doubt that they are not worth being concerned over. I bought a 530 (aluminum V8) back in the mid 90's. GREAT car, but they had a bunch of problems with the aluminum block. BMW's response: Give every 530 a 100,000 mile FULL drivetrain warentee. In late 2003 I leased a '03 745 and had a bunch of minor problems with the car and it spent more time at the dealer's than it should have. I told the dealer that I thought that the problems were unreasonable for a car that costs that much (no bit**ing or complaning, just a comment). BMW's response: They took the car back and gave me a brand new '04 equally equiped! These people stand by their cars fellow Bimmerheads! Fear not!!:rocks: |

Early Problems
They probably didn't ask. Or at least not politely. You'd be surprised what a dealer, or anyone for that matter, will do for a customer if the approach is polite and curtious rather than abusive and hostile.

In most new BMWs it is software related, especially if the car has I-Drive. A friend that is a former BMW Tech and is still friends with his former coworkers at BMW was telling me that some E60s (5-Series) have a vibration that BMW is currently unable to resolve. The first and second year (99-00) of E46 (3-Series) had a BIV - brake induced vibration problem that went on for quite sometime before BMW actually came out with a SIB - Service Bulletin to resolved the issue. In most cases it just made it less severe . The Performance Pkg. E46 330i has a stumble problem at low idle that causes the engine to sometimes die, software related. The E46 M3 has had 3 rod bearing recalls. The S54 engine it has a 6 year/100,000 mile warranty because it is a ticking time bomb...aka unreliable. The N62 in the E65 has had problems with valvetronic. The list could go on and on. Don't get me wrong. I love my BMWs, but my 88 M3 and 92 525i are less complex so therefore they are more reliable. I am by no means a newbie to BMW as I have owned the following: 1987 E30 325is, 1988 E30 M3 w/ 37k miles (currently own), 1992 525i w/ 147k miles (currently own), 1993 325i, 1999 E36/7 2.3 Z3, 2000 E46 323Ci, and a 2001 E46 330Ci. FYI, BMW AG (Germany) was thinking of using the '4-Series' for the E90 Coupes, but they decided not too. If they had used the '4' it technically still would have been a 3-Series. Sedans were going to be odd #'s and Coupes even #'s. Last edited by SCA; 04-28-2005 at 04:35 PM.. |

I'm waiting cause the first year 7's 5's z4's and 6's have had terrible bugs.
They were all adressed but still. The other reason is because the coupe will be available at around taht time as well. |

I was just using a "4 series" as an example. I don't know anything about what BMW had plans for with a coupe. The point I was trying to make is I trust BMW to make a very reliable car, even if it is a first year production. If something goes wrong, that's what the warranty is for. |

I totally disagree as I had a long conversation with a BMW Tech yesterday regarding the E90. You might want do a little research before you start stating that each 3-Series generation are similar to the former car. You're something if that is the case. Last edited by SCA; 04-29-2005 at 09:55 AM.. |

I think it depends if the person is willing to risk any first year bugs to get the car earlier than most. Also if the person is willing to have to deal with bringing the car in for some servicing should they issue STB's. Some people can't stand the thought of having the slightest thing wrong with their cars and having to bring it to the dealer, but some are willing to accept some chance of this to drive the car now (or next week). I don't think anyone is naive enough to think that there may be more issues with a first year car than later years, but I also don't think that there will be a ton of major problems to this car. Anyways, to each his own We all love the car no matter if it's a first, second or seventh year
