Chicago: Cost to Own
I'm trying to plan a move to Chicago...
I've visited the town plenty of times, and know that I'd like to live downtown or North (within 15 minutes). I'll use the L/taxi/bus for getting around most of the time, but I am still going to hold onto the M. What sort of parking arrangements are Chicagoans using? |

Well really depends on where you live.
If you buy a condo or something like that you'll pay anywhere in the range of $30-50k for the parking spot and its yours This is what I and most people downtown do. Or you could pay $200 monthly which would be like a payment on a financed spot anyway. or if you move somewhere North Side like Near North, Lincoln Park or Wrigley you can get a place with a garage. Are you most likely doing like a condo? House? Uhaul box on the corner? |

Deeded parking spot prices have come down quite a bit. Now's the time to buy. If you're talking about parking on the street, Chicago's hourly parking is a joke. I believe it costs over $4 an hour in high traffic areas. Public parking garages also vary depending on where your located.
If you need any financing assistance for a new purchase let me know. |

Thanks for the feedback.
I'm not committed to staying in Chicago, so I would rent for the first year. A brownstone in Lakeview or Lincoln Park would probably be the first option, though I'm still drawn to the convenience of a high-rise (particularly downtown). Street parking isn't an option. I've seen enough piss-poor parallel parking jobs in Chicago to know better. |

Yeah if you're renting there are tons of sweet places downtown that have parking spots for like $70 extra a month or more
If you want bigger just head a little bit west or a little north of the Gold Coast and you'll be fine |

I've been here for a month now, and a few thoughts come to mind...
I love the roads that are "in-process" construction. Meaning, the asphalt has been ground down to repave, but the street never gets repaved. One of those streets cost me a PS2. Billy Goat Tavern (on Michigan) was disappointing. The staff is entertaining, but the burger was horrible. I'm still partial to Giordano's deep dish. A lot of good Mexican restaurants, still looking for one that makes a good margarita. I completely underestimated the bus system. Holy f-, some of the hourly rates for parking downtown are criminal. |

what area are you living in? All the Rick Bayless restaurants have arguably the best Mexican food in the country (Topolo, Frontera, Xoco), and I think they have great margaritas. Best burger spots are, in this order, Kuma's Corner, Rockit, and Bull & Bear.
You can thank the greedy asphalt labor unions for their perpetually unfinished projects. Enjoy the city. It's been so humid lately, and with all the traffic from Lollapalooza and the filming of Transformers, it's been tough to relax. |

Lincoln Park. I've heard Kuma's Corner is really good (and that it's worth the wait). I haven't heard of those other burger and Mexican joints, but they're now on my list of places to check. Thanks.

I just moved out here last November and live in LP too. I have my AW M3 just sitting in my garage all week long...it's depressing. Where is your place? PM me I'd love to meet up. I still need to meet up with the other enthusiasts here. Straz
