335 coupe or sedan, i or xi?
Hey everyone,
So unfortunately I sold my 06 300i last august in order to save money for grad school. Well it turns out Im gonna be able to buy another BMW sometime towards the end of April. Im really excited so I'm starting to look now and see whats out there. Just wondering what you're opinions were as to which model you I should buy in the 335 class. Essentially, the coupe or sedan and the i or xi? |

You're from Calgary? If you are, and you are getting heavy snow consistently, I think the XI is a no-brainer. Here in NY/CT we get snow during the winter, but nothing that winter tires cannot handle. If RWD and winter tires cannot handle Calgary snow, then get the XI and don't look back. Now you just need to consider coupe or sedan.

You're in grad school?
Good stuff. I'll assume you're smart enough to decide whether you want 2 doors or 4, rear wheel drive or all wheel drive. You can go to the subforums and read reviews if you need help making a decision. |

IMHO The coupe is the better looking of the two. But if you need the four doors, well you need four doors. The sedan will be less to purchase used as well. I would agree, lots of snow = Xi/Idrive
Good luck with your new toy. |

AWD can be an occasional commodity, but the best car is RWD. I hate those wheel gaps anyway. If you don't intend to have a child within 5 yrs, I would go with a Coupe.
Frankly, as a student or freshly graduated, I would not dump that kind of money on a car. Not smart, IMO. |

I agree that RWD is the way to go for many of us, I've had no issues with 7" of newly fallen snow and unplowed roads. But since you are in a place where it snows, if this is your only car, you would be able to benefit from x-drive.
I like coupes, and this is a small car anyway, but that's just preference. |

I think the Sedan looks the best of all E9X variations. The coupe is too busy in my opinion and the door position looks unnatural to me. Having 4 doors is FAR more practical than 2. Not only for having more than 2 people in the car, but also for cleaning and maintenance of the car. Sedans also have lower insurance rates so this will be of a long-term benefit to you. I pay under $80 per month for full coverage for mine and if I was to have a coupe, I would have had to pay almost triple that cost.
If you are planning to take the car to the track, then do not get the X drive. Otherwise the X-drive is no brainer for you considering your location. |

I had a 335xi loaner for a few days, when the weather was the worst it had been so far this winter. It had winter tires and it was awesome.
I still prefer my RWD though. (I have a dedicated set of winters.) It's always a tradeoff. Here is a short review from C & D: http://www.caranddriver.com/reviews/...dan-quick_spin Here's another one which made up my mind to get RWD, based on where I live and the conditions I usually encounter (in southern Ontario): http://www.caranddriver.com/features...rive_3f_page_8 But based on my few days with a 335xi, I would seriously consider it, if I felt I'd be driving in worse conditions more often. Try them both out!

Sorry everyone, I really should've updated my profile, I no longer live in Calgary AB Canada, I live down in sunny Temecula, CA at the moment. Only reason I was considering the XI was because I plan on owning this car for a long while and on the off chance I have to move back to Calgary I would most definitely need all wheel drive. I just wanted to see if anyone preferred AWD over RWD even in the warmer climates. I agree that the 2 door looks a little better but practicability wise I'm thinking 4 doors.

I've had a e90 335i and a e92 335i and my vote is E92>E90 and i>xi
the xi is heavier and handles like a ford Taurus

Go with the i. Ive been driving in Calgary winters with RWD and haven't had any issues. Just get a proper set of winter tires and your good to go.

If you get an XI count on getting some coilovers. With XI BMW assumes you wana give up some sports elements for ground clearance. With coilovers I have zero problems keeping up with friends with an "i" in the bends while still being beastly in ice & snow.

I say go with the 335i coupe. The coupe looks so much more better than the 4 door. Its more sleeker looking. Unless you need a four door, I would get the coupe.
