Moonroof provide UV and IR protection?

So i'm planning to get my e91 tinted sometime in the next few months, so i'm trying to figure out what all i want done. One thing i'm wondering is whether the pano-moonroof provides any UV and/or IR protection as-is from the factory. I know it's tinted, whether it be film or the glass itself i have no idea. Just wondering if i should consider putting on a really light tint film on it, just for the sun protection, or if it already does provide proper sun/uv/IR protection.

I tinted my moonroof on my E90 with 20%. Makes a world of difference. I keep the shade open all the time now and don't feel the sun at all.

Close the slider/shade... 100% UV and IR protection.

Well, obviously i'm asking because i'd like to keep the shade open sometimes. Otherwise, what's the point of a glass roof?

The tinted sunroof should provide you with UV protection. Its OK with IR but like any car window, it could always be better. Ceramic and metallic tints provide the best IR protection while being at a higher percentage while dyed tints require lower percentages to achieve the same IR protection. I'd leave it untinted and just close the sun shade when parking.

You'd be much better off shelling out some extra $$ and tinting your front windshield with the 6x% huper optik or similar brand ceramic tint. It will make an amazing difference compared to tinting your sunroof.

hmm, well i'll probably pass on tinting the front winshield, just to not bring up the possibility of any problems arising in the future w/ it. However since you say it does already provide some uv & ir protection, i probably won't bother w/ the moonroof either. Thanks for the input.

As it comes, the plastic of the moonroof absorbs pretty close to 100 % of the sun ultraviolet. The infrared is a different matter, relative to the uv, quite a bit of the infrared will be transmitted by the plastic of this thickness in the region where it matters to humans. The people who tint windows may have some numerical data, and may have a coating to reflect it.

The MoonRoof is definitely treated with something from the factory, I sat in my cousin's '96 civic and his moonroof definitely was not tinted. The sun bothered my so much through his moonroof that i had to squint. Whereas if the sun had been in the same position and i'd been sitting in my car, The sun would not bother me through my moonroof to the point where i have to squint at all.

Besides, the door's windows from the factory are more transparent than the moonroof's glass. I noticed it before i got my tints.

I'm not going to bother to tint my moonroof. Its lightly tinted and its just fine, doesnt bother me. If you do plan on tinting it, maybe you could put a light tint on it.

Can't tint trap excess heat near the glass, causing it to shatter? I recall reading some threads on exploding sunroofs and it was(I think) attributed to tinting the moonroof.

The front tint is practically clear. I've been pulled over multiple times and a cop, nor anybody else, has ever noticed. Especially if the rest of the car is tinted. Best investment I've ever made.
