Smell of fuel and crazy RPM needle

Hey guys
I'm hoping this isn't an HPFP problem.

I went to turn on my car, and everything was fine.
it took a bit of time to start, but I figured, hey it is cold.. no biggie
then the car starts rumbling and shaking and my gear shift is vibrating like mad.
I look at my RPM gauge and the needle is at 500RPM, I rev and I start smelling fuel, the reduced power sign comes on (half engine)
I turn it off, turn it back on, this time the RPM goes up to 2,000 by itself, drops back to 500, shakes and gives me the same error.
I try again, and I reverse and I see no sign of fuel but I smell it, I put it back in my spot, pop the hood, and the engine looks normal but the car is still rumbling and the RPM needle is at 500 and the engine malfunction light is still on.

is it HPFP or something else?

scan with the BT and see what codes it is throwing... hard to tell.........
too many factors can create that problems... HPFP, injectors......

I had the same thing happen to my car. In my case they had upgraded the software incorrectly (forgot to initialize adaptation values). At least mine acted up about 1 mile from the dealer so I stumbled in there.

That's the injector problem.

I had it in the beginning of the Winter. You probably saw lots of white smoke came out from the exhaust also. The car shook like it was going to stall. "Engine Service" light came up too.

This problem went away after a couple of restart. The problem came more and more often every morning until the day I got my appointment to bring the car to the dealership.

Eventually it injectors on one bank of the cylinders where replaced.

I used to see a lot of white smoke
not this time though...
I thought it was just normal due to my catless downpipes

should I tow it or drive it there?

I vote injectors. Sounds like what happened to me.
If you have bmw assist, just call em up and have them tow it.
