Disappointed with my BMW and BMWNA
I never thought it could happen, but I am disappointed with my BMW.
The long of the short of it is, these Bridgestone RFT's that came on the vehicle are terrible in cold weather (dry road). I picked up the vehicle on 12/22/09 and have not driven it much cause I don't feel safe driving. Just a little throttle input and the traction control is kicking in. I relayed my concern to BMW a week after i picked up the vehicle and after a month, they can offer me nothing at all. Basically, live with it becuase it is a matter of personal preference. The inconsistency of products that roll off the assembly line just boggle my mind. In regards to tires, some come with Michelin, some with Bridgestone, and some with Continental. A friend of mine has the same exact vehicle that rolled off the assembly line with Michelin's and there is no issue at all. My last 335i had Bridgestones and I had to replace them with Michelins once it got cold. Now I have to do that again... I didn't realize that everytime, I purchase a BMW, I have to shell out a few hundred dollars after the fact just to feel safe. Oh well, now I know for next time. Ridiculous. BOO BMW!

You do realize the Potenzas (summer performance tires) aren't rated for use at near-freezing temperatures, right?

So let me get this straight. You're driving on summer tires in the dead of winter, and you're complaining because they don't have good traction. What part of "summer tire" do you not understand? Regardless of dry pavement, the summer compound is unsuitable for low temperatures. Go get some winter shoes and stop whining.

Who is responsible? A mute point?

The problem is that when we order the sport package, the tires are SUMMER/high performance. And this is the case for most-if not all-manufacturers. These tires are designed to maximize handling, acceleration, etc. and lose a lot of their traction when used below 40 F. They are NOT supposed to be driven in the winter, especially on snow and ice. The BIGGEST issue shouild be if your sales consultant did NOT tell you this fact. I do not know if they are legally required to do this. This is the question of " liability". I have learned that each BMW dealership is "privately" owned and therefore can function based on their own standards. You must get winter rated tires (snow tires recommended) if you plan on driving your BMW in the winter. Good luck.

Just for an example, when my dad was buying a Q5 from the Audi dealer, they had one on the lot with 20' with Summer tires. Nobody would buy it because of the tires, and the sales consultant was upfront and told us this.
We went ahead and bought a different one with smaller wheels (ride not so rough) and all-seasons. The point is, you, as a consumer, you have to always be aware of what your buying. However, the dealer still should have told you that the car had summer tires. So, end of story, buy winter tires.

This is a funny thread. Just set the car on fire & collect the insurance.

You need to return it with a set of tires anyway.. swap it out and put them back on for the lease return.. I am in the same boat as you thats what I am doing for my car. My last 335 had good traction and now I have the 19s from the factory the car won't stay on the ground.

Guess what?
My 3 came with the Pilot Sport PS2 ZP’s and I bought Blizzaks LM25 for the winter. Summer tires have no business in snow. The car is first rate it just needs the proper shoes.

I agree with everyone else. DO NOT drive any car in the cold with summer tires. It's stupid, and actually illegal in some countries for good reason. Get yourself a set of winter tires and drive your car safely.
Go to tirerack.com and check their videos about driving on summers in the cold. Watch them slide off tracks, and cold roads without even trying.

And they say e90post is an "enthusiast" board? :: (it is for the most part )
In 6 months in July we're going to get a thread from some guy who says his Blizzaks are wearing insanely quickly and that he is mad at Bridgestone ... |

any car with the sport or m-sport package comes with summer tires, which requires you to buy winter tires if you live in an area with snow. non-sport package cars come with all-seasons which perform good enough in the snow.

I'm riding around in my summer tires (Pirelli Pzero's) in the cold weather here in MD and haven't had any traction issues, but if there is snow on the ground I just take another car. Next year I will def. pick up a set of winter tires though.. or a beater SUV.

Yeah Maryland SUCKS in wintertime, man. Just be careful and don't let the roads get too slippery on you while you're out there. It's always safer to take another car/FF/AWD car when possible.

I had 17 all seasons conti's before the i got my 189's with stock bridgestnes.
17's drive so much better in cold and winter CAUSE ITS MEANT FOR ALL SEASON. 18's drive so much better in summer and grips very good CAUSE ITS MEANT FOR SUMMER PERFORMANCE. Tires have ALOT to do with how the car feels/ride.
