My Brand New 335i Smells Funny!

Just picked up my new SG with black 'ette coupe at noon today! :rocks:

After driving around for a bit I parked in my driveway and could smell a distinctive and unfamiliar odor coming from the warm engine compartment area. It wasn't like a burning smell or anything that caused me great alarm, just a weird chemical-ish smell.

Anybody know about this or have the same experience?

they put some type of chemical on the engine to protect it from the salt water while it is being shipped over here. You're just smelling those chemicals burn off

No I think it's something really bad with your car...
I'd be happy to take it off of your hands so you don't have to smell it anymore.

In the early days of catalytic converters, a new car would have a rotten egg smell for the first thousand miles or so. I haven't experienced that since my 1984 Toyota but that's four cars ago and I haven't noticed it lately coming from other new cars either. Maybe the CCs are better or the fuels have less sulphur. Probably the latter. And this is probably not the odor to which you are referring.

Cosmoline. Yeah - it makes a funky odor for the first couple weeks.

There is a substance called Cosmoline that is used on certain parts when shipping, as Ryan mentions. Here's a brief description:

Wikipedia entry for Cosmoline

There is an interesting article at Pelican Parts that may be of interest:

Painting The Intake Manifold On BMW E30 Series

A quote from that article:

Quote:
Now we have to clean and prep the intake manifold. Chances are, there is a yellowish film all over the manifold. This is called Cosmoline. BMW used to ship the cars from Munich with a protective coating all over the cars. This is what the Cosmoline is for. Most dealers used a special solvent to remove all the Cosmoline. Usually they neglected to clean the engine off, leaving the yellowish film. In order to paint the manifold, we will need to clean it off. I’ve found that acetone works best to get all the Cosmoline off. Try to find an acetone that contains xylene, as this is an industrial cleaning agent and will work well to clean off the Cosmoline. Clean every inch of the manifold. We need to create a clean surface so the paint will adhere. Once clean, use some painter’s tape to cover the mating surfaces for the intake runners and also for the throttle body.

Not really concerning the post, but I just realized that SG could either mean Sparkling Graphite OR Space Gray...and even if you wanted to differentiate the two acronymically(without pics ofcourse), you would have to go past the first three letters in each set...i.e. Spargra and Spacgra..orrrr...SKG and SCG would be the most distinctive....Any other suggestions??? It could be a new code that will be used to eliminate confusion for such a critical issue....bah!

sorry, but I'm really bored at work and suffering from sleep deprivation....

Quick Fix

While you're waiting for the stuff to burn off the engine, here's a quick fix: Get a fabric softener dryer sheet, like Bounce or Downy, and put it under the driver seat or passenger seat...works like a charm
