11 days after factory warranty and this.

Today I pressed the power folding mirror so that i can get close to the parking gate. When unfolding back, the mirror would not stop unfolding and would continue to go until it reaches the end. After i put it back into place theres like 1 cm wiggle room.

I searched on youtube and i have the same problem as this guy.

My warranty just ended

so i'm looking for a easy fix.

i'm just pissed that it had to happen sooo soon after my warranty ends. For people who have their warranty ending soon. I think they should keep testing their mirrors to ensure they are rock solid.

the mirror was pre-programmed to fail after warranty expires.

all late model bmw's are equipped with BMW wireless system that which uploads data through its BMW Assist telling them what our mileage is. Then when our warranty expires, the ECU is told to begin to execute failure script designed as a ploy to get owners to come back to dealers to spend money for repairs.

thats my conspiracy theory.... unless someone can prove otherwise by cracking their ecu software

Wow. After my warranty ends, I'm never going to use the folding mirror ever again. I'm just glad my car doesn't have nav or comfort access <-- just more failures waiting to happen.

Planned Obsolescence at it's finest.

Good luck fixing it man, hopefully it's not too expensive to fix.

I agree with your conspiracy theory, but am not sure about BMW wireless. As you can see from
http://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=347067
the wireless is not very reliable. Likely there is a timed Trojan horse built directly into the OS, and the horse is serviced each time the software is refreshed.

Now seriously, my heart is with you, beppy, and cannot offer you advice. My mirror is the same folding type as yours, but is still OK. I recall a few posts dealing with problems with these mirrors - try the search.

Lol, mine used to do that. After some manual pushing back and forth, it fixed it's self.

I'm pretty sure that this is actually a common problem. I think there was a TSB out about it that had to do with a defective motor. Anywho, that close to being out of warranty they should goodwill it to you. Or they're a-holes and never want you to purchase another car from them.

I agree with this. Or, if that doesn't work, just manually fold your mirrors from now on.

It could be worse, though. When I first saw the thread, I though the engine failed, or turbos, or something like that!

Am I the only person wondering why the mirror can unfold all the way to the front by design? What would be the purpose of that? You'd think they'll design the mirror to stop at the proper spot in event of motor failure (such as this case)

Murphy's Law is in effect. I'd try to get a good will gesture from the dealer, myself.

Just go to the dealer, out of "goodwill" and hopes of a returning customer and years of providing more service to you, they should fix it. If they say no, let them know you will be going to a different dealer to have it serviced then cause of their atitude lol.

How often do you fold your mirrors. Maybe using more can precipitate the failure of the power folding mirrors.

I don't use it often, but its so annoying now. When i press unlock, the car thinks the driver side door is folded so it automatically starts the unfolding action everytime i hit the unlock key.

I tried to manually lock it, but doesn't seem to be working. i'll be giving my dealship a call tonight and see if they can give me a quote on how much it would cost.

who makes the decision on these goodwill transactions at bmw? should i jsut talk to the service guys?

They might give you a grace period.

My Canon 5DMkII had a hot pixel and I looked at my receipt and found my warranty was expired by 2 weeks. I called them up and they said they would fix it no problem. They usually give their customers a grace period beyond the warranty. That's why I love Canon and I hate Sony. Canon FTW!

This post illustrates perfectly the purpose of good will repairs right after warranty!
