The cost of replacing M-DCT clutches is...
....3296$+ according to Car&Driver in their long term M3! They observed some slippage at 40000 miles.
Is it the very same transmission in the Z4 / 335is? With launch-control and everything? |

Those car magazine test cars get beaten to death. Probably the clutches last much longer being driven sanely by someone who actually owns the car and is paying their own money to drive it.

But that is very true, they push them regularly. Wouldn't really use C&D's advice on how cars perform in the long run. Especially when they don't own it.

as for BMW not offering a manual on future 1 and 3 series, you could not be more wrong.

DCT is not necessarily the future. It is over hyped automatic. It's not about getting over it and why should you try to impose your views on someone else?
The manual is a more visceral experience, PERIOD! If it goes away, which I doubt, it will be a shame. |

Automatic is good enough. The Steptronic's interface is one of the best (if not the best) in the industry.
I was a die-hard fan for manuals. After many automatic, the Steptronic is the first to change my mind. In manual mode, you can control the engine as much as you want, it is as fun as a manual and there is no drawback. I don't miss that 3rd pedal. |

I don't agree that it's as fun, but it's a personal choice.

And I can respect you for that, titanium silver guy Quote:
Clutch is strictly preference. Once auto trannies start getting offered standard on cars, the fact that it costs more as an option will be redundant.

If BMW stopped offering a manual transmission on their cars, they'd lose a lot of customers.
I Imagine, If BMW didnt offer a manual when i was buying my car, i'd probably be driving an Audi, **
