The cost of replacing M-DCT clutches is...

....3296$+ according to Car&Driver in their long term M3! They observed some slippage at 40000 miles.

Is it the very same transmission in the Z4 / 335is? With launch-control and everything?

Those car magazine test cars get beaten to death. Probably the clutches last much longer being driven sanely by someone who actually owns the car and is paying their own money to drive it.

DCT's are expensive, complex transmissions, while 6MT's will forever be supported by the enthusiasts.

But that is very true, they push them regularly. Wouldn't really use C&D's advice on how cars perform in the long run. Especially when they don't own it.

Manual is simply more fun to drive. Spending more $$$ to obtain and maintain doesn't add anything to the fun factor.

Be careful, you are asking for it saying things like that on this board

It's almost as bad as insulting those titanium silver guys

Isn't the only major league racing series still stuck to MT NASCAR? Everybody else has moved on. Off the tracks, AMG has long given up on MT, as well as MB. None of the newer ferraris comes standard with MT. Soon very BMW from 5er up will be fitted with the new 8-speed auto, and it's only a matter of time MT will disappear on the 1er and 3er too. Let's face it, MT is going the way of the dinosaurs, so come to grip with it already.

Btw, I have titanium silver and can take the insult

in racing, ok, yeah, it would make sense to have a fast shifting transmission if it results in faster lap times. but those teams have basically unlimited funds. in the real world of owning a car like that (whether or not its being beat on by a car magazine) that job can be up to 3 times more than a standard clutch. and i remember reading an article about how porsche is thinking about dropping their PDK for cost reasons.

as for BMW not offering a manual on future 1 and 3 series, you could not be more wrong.

DCT is not necessarily the future. It is over hyped automatic. It's not about getting over it and why should you try to impose your views on someone else?

The manual is a more visceral experience, PERIOD! If it goes away, which I doubt, it will be a shame.

Automatic is good enough. The Steptronic's interface is one of the best (if not the best) in the industry.

I was a die-hard fan for manuals. After many automatic, the Steptronic is the first to change my mind. In manual mode, you can control the engine as much as you want, it is as fun as a manual and there is no drawback.

I don't miss that 3rd pedal.

Some of us do like to keep our cars running for a while and not just lease and dump at the end of 3 years. For us, long-term costs is an issue.

I don't agree that it's as fun, but it's a personal choice.

I was going to make that Ferrari comment, as well. Not even a damn shifter in those cars anymore; strictly button-oriented.

And I can respect you for that, titanium silver guy

PDK isn't getting dropped, they are not getting rid of that trans since ownership shifted to the VW group. They will be offering it along with an extended line of vehicles, since not everyone in the world feels as though their dick is bigger than everyone else's because they drive a manual transmission, and Porsche isn't stupid enough to offer cars to such a small segment of the population; if they want to survive, that is, and they have fought Volkswagen enough (and failed) for their independence.

Clutch is strictly preference. Once auto trannies start getting offered standard on cars, the fact that it costs more as an option will be redundant.

If BMW stopped offering a manual transmission on their cars, they'd lose a lot of customers.

I Imagine, If BMW didnt offer a manual when i was buying my car, i'd probably be driving an Audi, **
