Ut Oh, Help !!!!

OK. Today I took the steering wheel apart to rewire the paddle shifters to be left down and right up instead of push/pull. The problem is now I have a Passenger Air Bag Restraint Warning. Wondering what I might have done wrong. I even took it all apart and checked all of the connections and put it back together. Not sure if the Passenger Air Bag warning comes on for the Driver's Air bag also or if this is a separate warning. All else seems to be working properly and I am wondering if it is not a simple fix if I should take it to the dealer and play dumb.... Thanks for the help !!

I had replaced a side window regulator on an E46 a while back. If I had turned the key on while the door panel (and the air bag in it) was off, it would throw a code indicating something wrong with the air bag. If that happened the code could be reset with the proper tool. (The recommended procedure was to disconnect the battery to eliminate this possibility.)

Maybe your code was thrown because there was power still there (don't know whether the ignition would even have to be on). If you can find somebody with the tool to reset codes, that may be a start.

Reset and see if it comes back.

Good luck.

This is how what could have been a helpful thread degrades. Kevin, Kiemyster was only asking a simple followup question to your previous statement that you were planning on purchasing the BT tool regardless. It didn't warrant a hostile response, and I can understand why Kiemyster answered in kind.

Personally, I believe if you are going to ask for help, don't antagonize the people who are trying. I understand you must be frustrated with your current situation, but ultimately it will not encourage anyone else to jump in and help solve your issue.

Fine, Sorry to be abrubt. Everything I have read seems to indicate that a BT scanner is for engine codes and will not help in this case. Apparently I need some type of SRS Scanner but I am not sure of that either. And I am pretty sure that the BT scanner will not do that. Perhaps he can tell me why it might work or offer some assistance rather than just coping some one elses post. Perhaps put a little thought into his response.... rather than a sacrastic little snied remark. I said that I would be happy to buy it IF it would help. Meaning that I am not sure it would help. So his response is just do it any way. Why what is the gain ?

Take it to the dealer and play dumb! Why mess with it even more? Working with air bag restraint system is pretty dangerous.

+1 on this. Although before doing that, I suggest returning the wiring to its normal state (if that's possible, I seem to remember this particular DIY requiring cutting of wires). It's a lot easier to play dumb if there isn't explicit evidence that you were tampering with the car.

No spicing involved. Just took one pin out and replaced it with another. Looks completely stock. The only way they would know is to actually drive the car in M mode AND use the paddle shifters instead of the stick. All wiring was tucked back in just like I found it because I did not want anything to rattle around in there as I have heard it can ... Definately going to try the playing dumb but I may actaully put the wires back first. Have to think on that one. I am sure that it is just a reset that is needed. Thanks for the help.

I did the same thing when changing my steering wheel. I had the battery disconnected and everything but one of the connections on the steering wheel was pulled off after I tightened down the bolt. Took the steering wheel off and noticed it had come lose. The ONLY way to get rid of the light is to use the BT tool or dealer. I just bought the BT tool and cleared the code and all is set now.

Great Thanks. I am glad someone confirmed that the BT scanner will clear it. I will go that route.

just because you got lucky in your answer does not mean that you really had anything relevant to say !! Especially since it was not your answer in the first place. Rather than be a dip sh*t why don't you try to make meaningful conversation for a change .... Let me know when you have something interesting or relevant to say ....

And I hardly think that me confirming something will work before I spend a few hundred dollars makes me the dumb sh*t......

Please be kind and considerate. You will live longer and the world (= E90post...) will be a better place for the rest of us.

And piss-off to those of you suggesting playing dumb at the dealer. Wasting tech time rather than owning up and helping them diagnose and fix the problem you caused.
