BMW covering retrofit oil cooler! WOOT!

After about two weeks of back and forth with BMW of USA, they have agreed to pay for the retrofit oil cooler to be put on my car. This word came within hours of an "engine malfunction" error to where my car is now back at the dealer. *sigh* At least it's all being done free of charge.

Hopefully after I get all the paint/body issues fixed next week, and the new oil cooler in the next couple of weeks and this engine issue resolved hopefully today, I'll have my car all back in perfect order before the baby is born! (one can hope.)

You've got Steptronic, right?

I'm probably totally mistaken, but I think 6MT cars get the oil cooler by default. There's a huge thread about it in the turbo mods section, and I believe most of the cars who needed the retrofit were Steptronic.

ahh okay good to know. I just bought her about 3 weeks ago so I'm still learning! =)

Ooh btw, an update on the engine failure. VANOS system failed, they are keeping the car for the next week while they strip the engine down and check to make sure everything is A-ok. Got a 2011 328 as a loaner, not a bad car but it's barren in there except for iDrive. I already miss the heated seats and I guess the sport package came with speed adjustable steering which this does not have, pain in the ass when navigating my office garage!! Hopefully I get the car back before next weekend, as I am going on a mini road trip and was excited to take the 335; kinda boring in a 328 with no options (no offense to anyone who has a bare 328!).

I believe the steering you're referring to is active steering, which is a standalone option. Sorry to hear about your VANOS failure - things like that make me want to CPO my car before warranty is up.

And your reason for editing before made me laugh

I need to eventually attempt to get BMW N/A to pay for mine too. Mine is an 02/07 build right before they started putting them in as standard on all. My car has never been in limp mode though so I don't think I have much of a case for one yet.

you are lucky, bmwna normally won't do anything for anyone but the original owner since all of us who bought pre-owned should have known better... They wouldn't touch mine since I am second owner.

I would push for it either way. It can only help to extend the life of your engine.

I'm trying to get BMW to move quickly so that the oil cooler arrives while the car is still in the shop. I would be pissed if I have to bring it back after I just spent the past week without it. Hopefully after all this gets done I'll be good to go, as of now, I have driven the loaner car further than my new 335.

This sucks but I knew the original owner (was my mother) and I knew the car was handled properly so regardless if I got a CPO car or not this probably would have still happened. What worries me is that I got a baby being born here in the next month or so and I can't be going back and forth to the dealer swapping out car seats and having the car break down with my soon to be daughter in the car. The point of me buying this car was to have a more modern, safe, reliable, fun car than the 2002 Civic we had. But even though the civic was a little beaten up from living in the city for so long, it still ran solid from oil change to oil change.

Hopefully this is the last dealer visit but I'm seriously considering at the least buying the extended warranty at this point which does not bode well for the future of this car in my hands.

We'll have to see, I'm sure my feelings will change once I'm back in the drivers seat.

MT cars that were not performance package did not have OCs (probably rare when referring to 335s). 2007MY step cars started getting OCs in about March 07.

Mine was a HPFP buyback (that I purchased with 14.8K miles) and I got approved for a OC retrofit in April 2008.

I really wish I had the oil cooler, but I don't (2008 e90). I haven't had any overheating problems, so I guess I don't really need it that badly - but it would be nice to have it!

OP - glad that BMWNA finally stepped up to the plate and agreed to cover your retrofit.
