Black Sapphire vs. Jet Black
Are these two colors equally as difficult, or is sapphire black a little easier in that it doesn't show quite as many swirl marks.

I'm not sure about BSM, but JB was a nightmare.

if you're thinking about buying of these don't. Pick a gray silver or white, much less of a headache

This. My E90 was JB, and because of having to maintain it so much I opted for SGM when I bought my E92. I don't actually have the car in my possession yet, but I hope SGM is a little easier to maintain.

theyre both difficult. i would say BSM is easier to maintain, not a lot easier tho. Jet Black is a really soft paint and you could get swirls very easily on it. but man is it an amazing color!

There is nothing better than a truly clean JB. But you can't just run it through the car wash every week and expect it to look good. Count on getting into some detailing if you go JB.
To me, BSM looks too light. I love the depth of JB. But there are a thousand threads on this.

Thanks for the input. I have Jet Black now and I absolutely hate it. It's great when it's clean but that only lasts about 30 minutes. It seems that the paint is much softer than other black cars I have had.
That does it, silver is next for me! |

So does your SGM...SG...whatever car show all the dirt/scratches etc that black does? I'm not quite brave enough to polish my own car yet. Maybe I'll practice on a loaner. When I washed my JB car in the evening, it usually went like this: I'm done! Looks great! Then the next day in the bright sun:

As another poster said, there are many threads on this. But here's quick summary:
- JB looks better under most lighting - JB is harder to keep looking sharp - both colors require a lot more maintenance and care than lighter colors - don't buy either color unless you like washing and waxing your car frequently (or can pay someone to do it right) The bottom line is that most people shouldn't buy JB or BSM. I don't think my next car will be black and I like taking care of my car more than anyone I know. Last edited by demosthenes; 01-28-2010 at 09:01 AM.. |

LOL. So that means you never cleaned it well enough in the first place? Did you keep it in a garage? (That's where mine stays. It's never outside).

I actually lived on a preserved (not active) farm when I owned that car, and there was no garage. I washed and waxed it often, but I wasn't so excited about polishing out the millions of micro scratches in the clear coat. But Optimum No-Rinse + clay + Chemical Guys M-Seal + Dodo Juice Supernatural made her look great. I've since moved, and the coupe gets a garage.

Black sapphire is definitely a pain to keep clean, but the metallic flakes in BSM hide more than you think in terms of paint imperfections.
I would say BSM is slightly easier, but its still black... |
