Bring the flaming...
...cuz I'm sure I'll get more than an ear full for this. But I feel like this forum is lacking in "experience." I've owned some lesser cars in the past and spent ridiculous amounts of money on them, like a 96 Acura Integra, 02 IS300, and an 06 EVO RS. Yes, the EVO is debatable, but I can tell you all one thing and it's where my point of contention lies...The forums for those cars have sooooooooooo much more valuable tuning knowledge spread throughout them. It seems like the people that own BMW's don't have the same tuning passion almost. If you think I'm crazy, just go to honda-tech.com, evolutionm.net, or even my.is/forums/ read around a bit and see how extensive their mods and knowledge of the cars is...it's crazy.
I mean hell, for instance, look at this thread on here and see what one of the guys is so adamantly posting thinking he knows what he's talking about...http://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=340082 Don't get me wrong though, I do love coming on this site and reading and posting as of late, but I just thought I would share my feelings. There is a lot of information on this site and you do have to search. That being said I was all over the VW sites for the last 6 years and over all there were many more useful topics and less bitching or asking which color you should get. Having said that in the few months I have been watching and posting to this site I have learned a lot. Just different people. I think that there are less people on this site who get their own hands dirty compared to the other sites. People still mod their cars but there are more people who pay others to do it for them(nothing wrong with that at all....I am by no means a master mechanic and get help often...thats how you learn). Just my observation. Not a negative comment against this site at all

I believe a lot of people don't go crazy with their stuff because of the great warranty BMW offers. I would hate to be a 335 owner and do a whole bunch of engine modifications and have my fuel pump blow and have BMW say well you changed factory specs, we can't cover that pump. Multiply that by 5 times until you end up selling the car and you've spent a crapload of money. I think that people just don't want to mess with those odds.
Don't get me wrong though, my good friend is a part of my.is and he has an 02 IS 300 L-Tuned car and we've done a lot of mods to that car, partly because it's really easy and relatively inexpensive compared to an E90/92. Modding is fun, just not when you have so much to lose.

^^ Even then that's not really it. People that mod up their cars and get the most performance out of it they can typically don't care about warranty. They do it because they love it and are willing to take the risk. You gotta pay to play.
My car's only a year old, so I'm holding back a little. When I'm officially out of warranty I'm gonna mod this sucker like crazy.

Plenty of people around here doing great things when it comes to tuning.
The difference is that even a half retard (I've seen it) can rip down a honda motor, get some cheap parts, build the crap out of it, tune the crap out of it easily, and make one hell of a fast car. Theres a lot more that goes into tuning a 2006+ BMW then most of those other cars and it isn't something that somebody sitting in their garage is just going to figure out. Most of it is programing and technology. |

IMHO, most BMW owners are a lot older and really don't care about the tuning process unless you are a real hard core enthusiast about performance. I think they get a lot of their information by just reading what goes on in the forums. I've noticed that a lot of the forums you stated above are import forums. Those tend to have a younger age crowd who tends to be more into a cars performance and tuning. Wait until you see a "vette" forum. That's all they ever talk about.

This thread is pointless...
Regardless, you need to check out the 335 forced induction forum. There is plenty of very technical discussion in there. Don't just look at the general forum. |

this forum wasn't created just so that people can share their tuning knowledge buddy........ i think it was created so that people can share ANYTHING bmw/general cars stuff related, including tuning knowledge. i agree with Noc57, read some more my friend there are a LOT of people part of this forum who know their tuning crap and def. have the "experience" you claim the forum doesnt.
i havent looked at those other forums you mentioned but in general if they do have more tuning related threads on them than this one does, my guess is that those types of cars, in my opinion, are.... more likely to be tuned? i dont know i really suck when it comes to explaining things lol but i guess we can think of it this way. put that integra and IS300 and an e92 side by side, and i would expect that the chances of the owners of the acura and lexus modding/tuning their cars to be higher than the e92 owner tuning and modding his e92. dont get me wrong if i had the money i would LOVE to do some mods and engine tuning to my e90 335i, but even without it, BMWs are still gorgeous cars and already have the performance that many people look for=). but thats my opinion. i guess what im trying to say is that to you it may seem that those other forums have more of that "experience" because those types of cars more people are more inclined to mod. a stock BMW will always look gorgeous in my eyes |

plus our cars dont cost 15,000$ so that if you put 10,000$ of mods, its a "great breakthrough" when you buy a car for 50k+ in the 335, its pretty much perfect minus the little suspension mods and simple procede/jb3 335>mitsubishi, acura, honda, subaru... |

i guess we are just happier with the way our cars are..
I think overall us bimmer guys dont feel the need to tune our cars much better than the engineers who designed it are. Im not trying to act as an elitest but theres a reason we all spent the money we did on a BMW |

I had a Civic SI, Sentra SE-R SpecV, Lancer Evolution VIII, G35 6MT & I kinda know what you're talking about. Like the others here, I just don't see a real need to go crazy on mods anymore. A tasteful spoiler, a tune, larger wheels/tires and maybe suspension on my 335i and I'd be set. It's a fair question and I think you'll get some good points of view.

Wow. "Small" mods being wheels/tires, suspension, spoiler, tune....that's like $5k to $8k right there....
I'm afraid to ask how much you spent on your old Civic.

I think one thing to keep in mind is this is the internet. It's sort of a half truth. When I got my Nissan, I joined a forum. There is enough info on it to rebuild the entire vehicle, as well as links to download the FSM's for free, put out for every Nissan, every year. That s*** costs over $400, yet they have it available for free download. I also observed people starting out with a car like mine, and leaving the forum for a Ferrari. No joke. It's the web. The OP should not get his panties in a bunch just because there are more "what color combo should I get" or "why is leasing for $879/mo. not a good move," or simply just bad advice altogether, than posts having some real substance behind them. It's not all bad, one just has to filter and maintain an ignore list.

maybe it is because the 335i does not take a WHOLE BUNCH of work to make it fast...it comes fast from factory and we are just enhancing it a little bit!
