335d Break-in
I have a new 2010 335d and read in the manual that all there is for a break in period is 1200 miles below 3500RPM or 93mph. That seemed easy enough. I am wondering if I should do an oil/filter change at 1200 miles like BMW recommended for the M3. I known there is not break in oil in the engine now that was confirmed by dealer. I wonder if it would be good to change diff. also called on with the 3M at 1200 miles. There must be reasons for doing this on the M3, I wonder if I would benefit from those same reasons what ever they are. I plan on keeping the car for as long as it will run so the cost is not an issue to me at all. Your thoughts...

I am sure you will get all kind of opinions. When I asked the same question to my dealer, I was told that "It is not required but we can do one oil change for you in between if you want" (of course I have to pay for it).
I decided that I will do one oil change myself in a month or two, when the temperature get warmer. At that time I should have about 4-5K miles. I got a diesel oil kit from my dealer for $79. This include an oil filter and 8 qts of Castrol SLX Professional OE 5W30. Changing the oil more often than recommended will not hurt the engine. If it is totally not necessary, then I lost $79! |

i'm gona see if they're willing to change my oil at 5000 miles. 1200 too soon imo. if they dont change it, i'll just do it myself. i'm at 2000 miles now. better safe wasting some money than any chance of engine damage. 12000 miles for first oil change is way too long i feel.
Looks like u got your car the same time around mine Hey scott, let me know what dealer says. |

According to the specs sheet, it's 7.5L which is 8 quarts.

FWIW, I have never done anything other than BMW recommended oil changes and have 154K on a 2000 E46 and 41000 on a2007 e91. Neither of which has ever used a qt of oil between changes!

Up to you. The M's have a limited slip differiental which may be why they do a 1200 mile break-in change. I can't comment on the 1200 mile oil change for the M engines. I will do an oil change at 7500 miles for my diesel because I run my car mostly in city traffic.

I changed mine at 1600 and again at 4500, but I'm pretty obsessive. I'm sure you could get away with just changing it according to BMW's schedule.

Diesels often are initally run-in at the factory with start-up oil that in some cases has a slightly different formulation, to assist in things like mating pistons rings ad cylinder wall, etc... Your choice if you want to change the oil prior to the CBS-directed change - consider potetial negative impact if something goes wrong with the engine and BMW NA asks, "Why did you change the oil early?" Just because the dealer does it doesn't mean its suppoted by BMW NA policy (think "rustproofing/undercoating" and look at the factory warranty wording of bodywork coverage).
Good comments about newer manufacturing processes and quality assurance. The "leftover metal particles" is pretty much an urban myth now for major Western producers of vehicles. Regards D.

I wouldn't bother changing the oil. The engine will likely outlast the chassis and everything else on the car. ///M cars required break-in servicing based on different engine, and differential break-in oil.
