End of the Touring model?
Roundel reports that the new 5 and 3 series BMWs will not include the Touring model for the U.S. market. They reported that 400 5er wagons were sold in 2009, but they expect 5,000 5 GTs to be sold in 2010, so the GT will replace the wagon. That means there would be a 3 GT to replace the E91.

So the theory goes, hence my recent ordering of a new 2010 E91. Even Audi has dropped their manual transmission option for A4 Avant (Wagon) and S4 Avant (Wagon) all together. A sad state of affairs for us Wagon lovers.

I personally think the GT vehicles will be big failures. The 5 GT is big, inefficient, unattractive, and expensive. IMO, its answering a question nobody is asking.
I'm not a SUV guy, but I'd buy an X5 long before I'd go for a 5 GT. I can understand BMW dropping wagons from the US market because they don't sell well here. But, IMO, the sensible alternatives should be the X1/X3/X5.

in what universe is an SUV the sensible alternative to a wagon??????
The GT's make a lot more sense as they a more car like and weight less and consume less than the equivilant SUV |

No manuals for the X1 or X5 here in the US and no wagons -- that doesn't leave much.
Volkswagen? I doubt Honda will be selling too many of their Crosstours, either.

Maybe only having e91's as special order would be better

The GT's are hugh terds. They don't have more room than the wagons. They just are the currnet auto fad and hopefully will quickly go away.

Wagons are far, far superior to any crossover or SUV on the planet. They are lighter, more nimble, have lower centres of gravity and handle just like the sedans. I would be very pissed with BMW if they dumped the wagons.

VW sold over 12,000 Jetta Sportwagens in the United States during the first 9 months of 2009. Most of them diesel, many of them MT.
Meanwhile BMW claims that small diesels don't sell, wagons don't sell and manuals don't sell. It is almost as if BMW's North American marketing department came from GM. Last edited by 742; 01-12-2010 at 08:18 PM.. |

Just about correct. I had to order my MT E91 'cause they just don't sell here. The ONLY reason I have a BMW is because there are no other rear drive manual wagons on the market. If they weren't selling them, I don't know what I'd have but it sure wouldn't be an SUV or crossover that's for sure.

Americans don't understand wagons, even though they are the most sensible option for those needing extra room. They really never caught on here since the SUV came along.

They do, they just don't bring it to the US because the wagon market is so small.
