Disappointing Weathertech Mats

Has anyone who bought the custom fitted Weathertech mats found that they offer inadequate protection to the firewall carpet - especially on the passenger side? I trial fitted the set I bought and immediately noticed this flaw. My OEM BMW winter floor mats extend well up over the firewall carpet. This makes sense as passengers inevitably will stretch out their legs so that their shoes will soil the firewall carpet with mud, slush, salt, dirt, etc. I plan to return the mats for a refund.

Well, I had a disappointing experience with WeatherTech for my TSX (doesn't fit well, slides around). Luckily, I'll be getting the BMW ones with my purchase.

I did notice this, but I love the weather tech molded mats. In the winter I simply put a thin rubber mat behind the passenger molded mat to protect the firewall carpet

I threw the BMW all season mat on top of the weathertech exactly for that issue

But wouldn't that look kind of crappy? I bought these so they would look well integrated into the interior. Do you have a photo of how that looks? For the moment, I would rather stick with the winter mats that came with my car as they provide pretty good coverage - better actually.

Only disappointment (from my wife) is that when the water pools in the mats, she get's the bottoms of her pants dirty (if you know what I mean....).

The black ones show the salt too, but this is Canada. Expensive but good. Haven't noticed the passenger firewall problem but have black carpet.

Reading this makes me happy that I just stick with my black carpet OEM mats all year long. Pebbles...just shake them off and good as new. Salt stains...vacuum, brush with carpet cleaner and good as new. Water...just absorbs and dries as good as new. My carpet underneath...good as new! They're not slippery when they are wet and the first dirt mark just rubs way. I am never going back to all weather rubber mats since they always look like crap and take away all luxury feeling from the car.

I have my pant savers that I bought back in 2000. They have worked amazing on every car I have owned since. Carpet is always salt free come the spring.

$40 for the pair, have lasted 10 years now with zero signs of wear. Can't beat that ROI.

Care to elaborate on the pant savers? What are these?

I ordered the floor liners and were very disappointed by the fitment... the rubber BMW OEM mats cover and fit better. I was also disappointed with the quality and grade of the mats. They felt like a plastic vs rubber. They were half the weight of a typical winter mat like the VW Monster Mats (which are great).

I returned mine and put the rubber BMW OEM mats back in.

I had weathertech mats in my Lexus, hated them, fit wasn't great, material is cheap and best of all they are pretty much just a big bowl of water if you get any amount of snow in them as they don't have nice deep rips like the BMW rubber mats to trap the water. Not worth the money in my book!

The rubber BMW OEM mats ARE Weathertech mats. In fact, the only difference between the Weathertech mats and the BMW mats is the BMW logo.

You may mean these mats though, which are a more expensive Weathertech product:

I have both the BMW/Weathertech mats and the carpet mats. Don't like the former, can live with the later. The rubber mats always look dirty to me. They don't slide around (at least in my car) but they feel and look kind of cheap. I think the premium people pay for Weathertech mats is not worth it.

I would disagree. I love the full coverage my floor liners give me. The fit is 99% good. after having "standard" style winter mats in my old Accord and saw white salt residue left behind all around the edges of the mat. (especially by the front seat anchors) I put WT floor liners in the wife's new Ridgeline from the start. After last winter and seeing how they protected, I was sold and bought mine. Not perfect, but does give the most coverage of the carpet.

I get around that by carrying some old newpaper around and throw it in to suck up the salt water when it gets sloppy.

Black carpets aren't so hard to keep clean. If they were light then you would be able to see EVERYTHING

I can't figure out how to get the driver BMW all-weather mat to stay put with either the summer or winter anchors... I'm constantly catching the far lip with my clutch.

The BMW all-weather mats are OK, a bit flimsy, but adequate. I'm surprised at how cheap/thin the summer carpeted mats are.

I'll throw a pic up when I get back home. It looks fine IMO. What you primarily see is the BMW rubber mat - so a totally custom fit, with the weathertech peaking out around the left and right edges.

The drivers side and rear are just the fitted weathertechs. They're fine. The issue was mud/dirt on the firewall from a front passenger - especially since I have a daughter into equestrian.

Only complaint besides that about the weathertechs is that they're a bit slippery, so my right foot heel doesn't stay as planted as I may want.

I've scrubbed enough salt off around the mats on my other cars (or have the detailer do that every spring anyway) that I think they're worth it.

I completely agree. My car came with creme beige ones that I immediately changed to black carpet. Between the black dash, grey poplar and other black bits here and there, they look great and are easy to keep clean.
