Arrow Over Heating ERROR again.

I just got it back from the shop recently, and it happens again. "Over Heating error"
The shop tested for leeks, and it was fine. They said that it’s not the water pump, and they can't duplicate the error. I check the rad. coolant it was full, after the car cool down of course. What do you think it is? Your help would be appreciated.

Maybe you have air in the system. Air bubbles or pockets can cause over heating... Try bleeding the system.
It could also be a faulty thermostat.

It is probably not the thermostat. The thermostat is electric and fails in the open position. If the thermostat mechanically fails it triggers the Service Engine Soon light and reports BMW fault code 2EF4: 2EF4 map thermostat, mechanics Error.

It might just be a bad temperature sensor. Does the car actually overheat?

I hope that the case. I'm taking my car in on wed. maybe this time they can solve the issue. To answer your ? I had to wait at least an hour for my car to cool down. So I guess it does over heat. I hope that helps.

Not finding leeks in your cooling system is good.

Did they also check for leaks?

Sorry, I couldn't resist.

I had an overheating issue last week. My fan was going crazy! Had car towed to the dealership and was told that the water pump was the culprit. Hope that this is not a pattern.....

Yea that's exactly what happen. My cooling fan was going Crazy! That sucks, maybe it's the water pump gone bad. I wonder, how come they didn't find that out the first time around.

It would be normal for any car to have to cool down for an hour before you could open the coolant reservoir to reduce the possibility of being scalded. When the coolant is hot it is under about 16 PSI of pressure. Opening the cap lets the coolant escape the system.

Here's an easy thing to try... The cooling system is under pressure and if the pressure doesn't hold properly, the car will overheat. Try a new radiator cap or recovery tank cap if that's pressurized. Much cheaper than water pump and other stuff.

Hi bmystic, any update on this? My E92 330i is currently out of action due to this problem. I don't want to pay the Stealers £800 for putting a new water pump in, so tomorrow I'm getting it on a lift and investigating the water pump / thermostat... Did you say yours was only blowing cold air inside the car? That's what mine is doing too.

I spoke to one of the friendly tech guys at my local dealer and he admitted that the early water pumps were failing a lot, and the design has now been changed, but that BMW won't officially admit to this and will not cover the cost of their design flaw...

Just had car on ramp and took undertray off, I think prob water pump fail as 12v getting to pump power and control wires. Ordered new pump and thermostat from main dealer. Will post pics of pump from underneath if anyone is interested...

Would a small gasket leak cause this? (Mayonaise oil underneath the oil cap). Could it be so small that he's not seeing white smoke?

Here are a few pics I took of the pump today... Not great to see what is what I'm afraid, not much clearance under there and no wide-angle lense.

I think I can get the pump out by undoing the anti-roll bar mounts and swinging it down out of the way... I'll try to remember to get some better pics when I do the actual replace.

do you live close to the ocean? There seems to be a lot of rust on some of the metallic clips and hoses. I don't think my car has that much rust..

Just curious..

I don't live near the ocean... I was curious about the oxidisation myself, seems only limited to those power-steering hose ends. Perhaps all the salt on the roads here in winter. Anyway after fixing the water pump, I gave them a nice spray of lithium grease, so hopefully should slow down any further decay!
