Luxury vs Performance
Just some thoughts that ran through my head while sitting in traffic.... In a 328 Xdrive loaner.. Given how every new bmw model gets more options...
I bought my car for its performance and handling... As I assume most of you did as well. After owning other makes... Not sure that I consider my car a "luxury" car.. more of a performance vehicle.. Not like a ferrari... but not like a cadi or bentley or lexus. However, most of the non-BMW / non-enthusiast that I encounter consider BMWs to be "Luxury". Do you find this to be true? Some additional random thoughts.... What "luxuries" could I live without? HD radio I-drive heated steering wheel Upgraded pricing! heated rear seats DVD for kiddies Luxuries that I gotta have: heated seats (wish I had climate controlled) Blue-tooth Ipod comfort access with push button BMW performance and handling Whats your thoughts? Which ones must you have vs nice to have but not required. Perhaps BMW could review.. then save some weight on newer models! LOL |

I got the 335i, standard six speed and MSport package for the performance, the metalic paint, leather seats and satellite radio were for luxury. You could make the argument that the MSport over the regular sport package is a luxury item becasue after the wheels, suspention and seats the rest is mostly BS that looks cool.

I'd say...
...Sport Luxury.
The essence of the BMW brand is centered on Sport, for which buyers are willing to pay a premium. Because of the premium, BMW offers Luxury features to maximize the revenue opportunity.

IMHO all I need to be happy is ZSP and 6MT. Bluetooth and iPod come in a close second. Could care less about iDrive, wireless key fobs, wood trim, etc...

+1 on the Luxury Sport
Must Haves: Comfort Access iDrive Sport Package Leather Adaptive Xenons Heated Steering Wheel & Seats Sun Roof Bluetooth Individual Audio USB / IPOD Rest Button Items that I currently have that I could do without: HD Radio - Not enough broadcast it. Satellite Radio - Audio quality is garbage. Compass Mirror - Don't need it with iDrive |

I have a 335i. I have owned a lot of cars over the years and this is my first BMW. This is my impression so far. Not all that luxurious, not all that sporty but a very good balance between the two and an excellent fun to drive daily driver. I think this is exaclty what BMW had in mind when they designed the car and they seem to have pulled it off.

I also vote for BOTH...performance and luxury. Again, BMW really knows how to strike a balance between the two with their 3 series. They are not true sports cars (nonMs) and not very luxuorious, but a damn well balanced car. We literally get the best of both worlds at a, dare I say, fairly reasonable price. I just wished they would include more luxury items as standard items They nickel and dime you for every little thing. Common now....$250 dollars for an iPod adapter!!?!?

Sport first, luxury second. It's the other way around with Lexus and Mercedes.
The ride/handling balance is a good example. Our ZSP equipped cars are clearly set up for great handling, but most non-enthusiasts would hate the ride, especially with RFT's. I like my premium package but I could do without it. But I couldn't do without ZSP, Xenons and 6MT. |
