Transmission Overheating?

Greetings All! I was parking my car this afternoon and I heard the fan working extra hard. I turn the car off and then a few minutes come back, turn it on and begin to drive and the fan is again working extremely hard! I then get a transmission too hot sign. Im like WTF? its 30 degrees out and I had only driven the car for about 10 minutes for the whole day. The transmission is not shifting smoothly. Any ideas as to what could be causing this? Thanks for your feedback!

No. Have not noticed any leaks. Just made an appt with my dealer, who is about 30 miles away. How much damage can be done to the tranny if it is the fluid and I drive it there?

I wouldn't drive it at all.... not enaugh oil in the tranny is serious stuff...metal particules can block something which will require to take it apart and that's big $....
Doesn't BMW have free road side assisstance ? I will inquire... Still have warranty ?

I would start by asking your dealer what they want you to do. If the transmission is noticeably acting up, they will probably send a tow truck.

EDIT: I subscribed to this thread - please let us know what they find out. I have a 6AT and have zero issues in 2 years (but only 16K miles). I love this car and have been very happy with the trans thus far.
Well guys and gals, I was mistaken, the little sign was NOT the transmission, but the ENGINE overheating! Anyway, had the car towed and was later told that it was the water pump. My warranty just ran out so I am out about $1,200 bucks. Anyway, a few weeks ago I had all six injectors replaced with some other minor items to the tune of $3,800, which the dealership covered as a goodwill gesture. Hm...searching for a CPO ASAP!

I have 2011 323i with about 160k kms on it with same issue, I have changed the transmission oil but still its shows transmission overheating when am in heavy traffic. I have checked the transmission oil type too and am sure it’s the right one ie dexron vi/ ZF lifeguard 8. Could it be the water pump?
