Problem with gear shift

I'm driving a '08 335i coupe, automatic. The other day I was driving in sport mode and then suddenly when I was accelerating (I wasn't manually shifting) it felt like the gear was 'in between gears' and the exhaust was making a deep pitched rumbling noise and the car was shaking a bit. When I pressed on the gas it would aggravate the symptoms and actually the car wasn't accelerating that much even though I was pressing on the gas pedal. So I had to pull over, turn the engine off, and when I restarted it everything was fine. Has this happened to anyone and if so, what is the problem and solution? Thanks in advance.

That sounds more like the dreaded fuel pump than a transmission/gear issue to me.
