Normal 335d Operating Temperature?

Last night I accessed my 335d's hidden menu to pull up the coolant temperature display, and I'm wondering what the normal range is for the diesel. Last night it hovered between 86 C (187 F) and 90 C (194 F), but I wasn't driving for too long so perhaps it should get hotter once its completely warmed up? My brother's 530i runs at between 90 and 100, but I'm guessing the diesel runs cooler to begin with.

Nobody knows and tbh I don't think they would care. The 335d doesn't come with a temp gauge, so there's no point in "wondering".

Yeah, I don't think anyone knows...you could always monitor it, since you now have access to it, and see what kind of results you get.

Then you could report back to us, so we're aware of your findings.

Wouldnt happen to be a way to access that on the 335i ? Would there?

195 should be perfectly normal for most gas cars.

I dont know if diesel really needs to run hotter but I dont see any cause for concern.

You will be alerted by the CEL if there is something to worry about. Thus the reason there is no gauge.

My understanding is that diesels tend to run cooler. That's one of the complaints... they take a long time to heat up in the winter. FWIW, the temp gauge on my Jetta TDI claims 190F almost all the time. Not that those gauges are designed to say much other than "woah, way too hot".

Compare that to the 335i which runs at 240F all the time as "normal". I've had it as high as 290F gunning the car up Mount Palomar. Granted, those are oil temps.

The hidden menus should be the same either way. This website has a guide on how to access them.

And it's not that I'm worried about anything, I'm just trying to figure out roughly how long it takes the engine to warm up, so I know when it's safe to give it some revs.

I guess I'll keep an eye on it and report back. For now I haven't seen it go above 90 (194), and around 85-89 (185-192) seems to be pretty normal, so perhaps it does run cooler than a gasoline engine.

The normal operating temperature of the 335d ranges between 185 to 195.

In the summer it could go as high as 210 or so but usually comes right back down.

I have the BMW Performance wheel which gives you water temp but not oil temp like the gas variation.

since you asked experience on my 320d with MT
- summer 92-94C
- winter (recent weeks): 88-90C. But in my case it will take about 30mls to get there though, spending 95%+ of it on motorway. Temp will go up fairly quickly under load uphill, but it will even go down coasting slightly downhill on motorway while still being far below 80C
- while regenerating: 94C even now
- idling at traffic light = cooling off

cheers,

+1, drive the car and don't worry about it. The computer monitors this stuff for you.

You're absoutely right - diesel engines are in fact more thermally efficient than gas engines and consequently have lower operating temps (both oil and water)

As a side note, the E90 and E70 both use an auxiliary PTC heater to get the interior temps up quickly. Basically it is a 1250 watt ceramic heater that heats the air passing through the heater core.

Argh, I can't stand looking at those pictures. The only thing I like more about my car is my driver's side floor mat. Good to know you left some room for improvement.

What's the steering wheel you have there?

Sorry about the brief thread jack.
