3rd HPFP raplacement - sigh....
Unbelievable...that's all I can say. I am now on my 4th HPFP since I purchased my 335i back in March 07. It's a Feb07 build and I'm at 49,800 miles.
Even though it has the 120k/10yr warranty on the new fuel pump I'm just not sure if I want to keep it anymore. For those tracking each of my replacements has been the standard part number that ends in 881. This is my 3rd 3 series in the past 10 years and it's just crazy how many issues I've had with this one. Ok, enough complaining... |

can you try to figure out which fuel pump serial number you got?
the past 3 and this 4th one. also since you're faililng so often, tell us what gas station you're using. perhaps it is a combination of things. |

HPFP
Sure. From all my service reports it looks like I 've rec'd the following part numbers:
Original HPFP: no idea part # Aug 2008: 13-15-7-585-655 Oct 2008: 13-15-7-592-881 Jan 2010: 13-15-7-592-881 I mostly fill up with 93oct at local Chevron. I've been using this same fill station for 9 years across 3 different BMW's and never had issues with the other two 3 series... Of course there are pleanty of times I've used other gas stations but I never stop at any of the "cheapo" fill stations. |

At least looks like the 881 part outlasted the 655 part. That is some progress right?

Complain away. That's outrageous.

Wow, thats a bummer man. At that point, I'd start to worry that I'd be stuck on the road somewhere, especially driving miles from home.
On a side note, I wonder if anyone's been late to a wedding because of their HPFP |

I'd say its time to sell it or time to purchase an extended warranty. As an experienced BMW owner you have probably heard the horror stories from owners of non warranty cars and the expensive repairs bills that come along with Euro car ownership. That 100K warranty extension only covers the HPFP. These N54 cars also have injector and turbo issues.

Vent away. I would too if I was on my FOURTH HPFP. Just ridiculous. It's unfortunate the the e9x 335s will go down in history as the model that had the HPFP issues! And not the model that had the beautiful twin turbos with very little lag.

I know your pain I'm on my second HPFP and my second 335i. The first one had so many issues they did a trade assist after 3 mos. The second one was solid to 20k then the first HPFP went, now after two months the second went. Good news is they replace them in under 2 hours now.

Not sure I buy that I think the incidence is probably pretty high. The level of people on the forums is certainly high and if you get people with 1-3 replacements clearly they have a serious issue with the HPFP. The only thing that would make the incidence low would be if there was some additional factor combined with HPFP causing the failures but I have not seen any correlation in all of the reports Ihave read that would point to that.

The way I look at it is that BMW sells about 200k vehicles a year in the USA only, we have 3 years worth of sales with n54 engines... and let's call the n54 equipped engines just 25% of sales. That's 150,000 cars out there with x35i on their trunk. How many threads of HPFP failure have you seen? 100? 1000? While we can never know for sure- I think the forum complaints are to be taken with a grain of salt. |

I know my SA at BMW says that they get quite a few, I know three people with 335's including myself and 2 of us both have had the HPFP replaced at least once. So while I don't know the statistical numbers the ancedotal experience seems pretty high. If the HPFP design is not faulty then why would people be getting multiple replacements?

BMW claims it's a small percentage, although I don't know if I believe that either. |
