2006 325i acting like I just accidentally shifted into neutral...
I have had an issue since October with my car acting like I just accidentally shifted into neutral. For example, I was driving about 50mph and all of a sudden my rpm's revved up but I wasn't accelerating. I pulled over, put the car in park, then back into drive and it was fine. Well, for a few minutes anyway... and it happened again. It does this at complete random and at various speeds, once or twice a day, once a week, etc.
Any one experience the same kind of issue? |

Thank you~
The shop foreman at the dealer said he had no idea what do do about the issue and if I couldn't reproduce it then he can't do anything to fix it. I think that is crap... how can I reproduce something that happens so randomly? They have been trying to figure it out since October... they haven't said anything about a clearing tranny adaptions or updating any software. What software would that be? The transmission module software? |

BMWs outsource their trannies. I'm not sure about the 325i's, but the auto 328i's have a GM tranny and the auto 335i's are ZF.

Sounds like the tranmission is going bad. That's the thing about auto trans. There is no way to tell when it is going until it is too late. I would change the trans fluid first though.

I am really interested of the outcome of this issue....
I have an AT amd I like to play with the S and manual mode which for sure it's a bit more stressfull on the tranny than the normal mode so I hope I'm not digging my own grade. A refurbished tranny is $2500 without the install so that's not small change for me ~

That's the biggest mistake people do... They don't understand the forces that are involved when a vehicule is still moving and you force the tranny to counter that momentum. I almost killed a mechanic once when I saw him doing that....Even when I accelerate from a complete stop, I start slowly until the tranny is engaged properly and than I accelerate.

I'm not familiar with BMW AT's, but it sounds like the problem is related a device controlling the tranny, not the internal workings of the tranny. If that's true, that's good news, IF they can find it. A sensor with an intermittent problem could do strange things.

Sounds to me like the same thing that happens when you're in cruise on an MT and pull the car out of gear, The revs jump up and the cruise turns off and a chime goes off.
Did you happen to be in cruise control when it happened?
