Clunk from rear
Hi
Finding it hard toget an answer on this one. My 2005 X3 2.0d has developed a knocking/ clunking noise from the rear when slowing down or changing gear. Does not happen when cold, the hotter it gets the worse it is, esspecially on low speed left hand bends. Have checked c.v. joints, coupling, wheel bearings-all in good condition. It sounds as if the the crownwheel and pinion is floating around. Has any one else had this concern? What was the out come? |

drain the differential and look for excessive wear. if the system is grenading, you'll find lots of shavings in the bottom of the pumpkin. BMW probably equips the units with a magnet, but even if they don't when you drain the oil, you'll see lots of debris, if your system is grinding itself to death.
however, one thing i would check are universal joints. i believe ours are unserviceable, which means they'll just fail. i would check there, and see if any of those are out of spec.

Thanks for the advice. Will drain oil soon and check contents. I dont expect diff failure on BMW with 40,000 miles-very poor. If it is the worst, I will contact dealer for goodwill contribution.

clunk
Hi
It could be another problem as well. I have heard from the director of sales of bmw in Norway that one of the walls in the petrol tank might come loose, and the sound would be like you discribe. These wall are placed there to prevent the sound that you hear... Hope you come to a solution! |
