Raising Tire Size

Greetings fellow Bimmerfans! I was looking to get Ultra High Performance All Season (Contis Extreme Dry Wet Snow (DWS)) tires for my 335i. My car has the sport package (225/40ZR18 F and 255/35ZR18 R) and I wanted to get a little better ride from my tires as well as maintain good performance through the winter (not driving in the snow). Anyway, I was wondering if there was any downside to upping to 225/45/18 F and 255/40/18 R? Would there be any rubbing? Anyone had any experiences with these tires? Any comments, suggestions would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

I wouldn't do it.

It will knock your speedo off, reduce performance and improve gas mileage.

Plus, your car wasn't designed to work with the bigger tires.

I disagree. The sizes you are talking about are only marginally different...slightly taller and narrower, thus you shouldn't have any problems with these sizes especially if you're car isn't lowered. In fact, they might even make your speedo more accurate since every 335i I know of reads 2-3 mph too high anyway.

However, you shouldn't assume the larger sizes will guarantee better ride. That's really a function of the tires themselves more than the tire size alone.

Bottom line, you won't have any performance or rubbing issues with these sizes.

Hey Chief.
I have and had the sport package on my last and current e90 335. On my '07, I did a direct swap w/ Pirelli P Zero Nero M&S in the factory sizes, and the difference in ride from the RFT Bridgestones was amazing.

I really don't think you need to step up a size.

As a side note, I'm about to put the P Zero Nero All Seasons on my car, as they supposedly have better winter traction than the M&S version. I looked at the Continental DWS, but decided against them, as the tread pattern on the Pirelli is slightly more aggressive for summer driving, even though they are both excellent high performance all season tires, and each have excellent Tire Rack ratings.

PS You should probably post this in the Wheel and Tire forum in regards to your original question

Agreed that changing the tire type in itself will have more of an effect on ride than the 1/2" taller sidewall, but every little bit helps. The tires you chose do happen to have very good ride quality, especially compared to summer run flat tires. If it were me, I'd just stick to the correct factory sizes.

In theory, the dealer could refuse warranty service on ANY part of your car as you've altered the odometer readings - which way is immaterial, but a non-standard tire diameter may be considered odometer tampering.
