OIL change?

I have seen lot of members getting their oil change at 5000 miles and even less. I read a post where the dude has 2 oil changes at 5700 miles but when I check my iDrive it says 14000 miles left and my car has 4700 miles on it. Oil level comes OK and little less than max on the graph.

What is the right time/mile for a oil change???

thanx

The people changing their oil early are likely either believers in after break-in oil change or that the cars need their oil changed more frequently than the factory recommends. Personally, I am in the first group, not the second.

Folks that autocross and track drive their vehicles fall into a third catagory of people that believe you should change your oil more frequently.

I once owend a 1967 Jag XK-E. It was an inline 6 with a 10 quart oil capacity. A Jag mechanic told me to change the oil every 1000 miles and I did religiously. I now own a 2004 Porsche Cayenne S. It uses Mobile 1 and the book says change oil every 20,000 or once a year. I change oil every year ar around 12,00o miles. I have a new 335i on order. I plan to do the same thing. These new computer designed engines using synthetic oil do not require frequent oil changes when using synthetic oil. If it gives you piece of mind to change oil every 3, 5, or 7 thousand, go right ahead. But it's not necessary.

I'm a firm believer in getting rid of all the break-in contaminents in the oil. I will change the oil 2x before the first scheduled change at 26000 km. After that I will change it mid way between the scheduled changes. I don't doubt that the oil itself will be fine for the full duration, but I do live in a rather dusty area, so I am concerned with oil cleanliness.

Do you want a high likelihood of your engine lasting 50,000 miles? 100,000 miles? 200,000? There is no one “right” answer to your question, rather it is a matter of life expectancy and acceptable risk over that time.

I intend to keep my car in the family for 150,000 miles or more. I am aware of MB’s sludge problems, painfully aware of VW’s and skeptical of what happens when accountants and marketing goons get involved in the design of maintenance programs and oil specs. My oil got changed at 1500 miles and here after will not be run past 7500.

On the other hand I would not suggest that someone on a lease do anything other than follow BMW’s guidelines. Of course I won’t be buying their car .
