walnut creek has a good nightlife, and I would recommend it (I think HRC lives there)

san ramon/danville/pleasanton are nice family suburbs

I'd avoid fremont, it's sort of ghetto.

fremont doesn't really have a nice downtown area, and it has a TON of low rent/ghetto sections. You could easily end up in a bad area if you don't do enough homework. A bunch of fremont is old and run down.

fremont doesn't really have anywhere to "hang out" aside from maybe the saddle rack which is quite fun.

walnut creek is going to be a little more expensive, but the place is much nicer.

alameda's OK, or even the right part of Oakland may be fine

are you looking for a fun spot for a young person or a spot to raise a family?

I'm 28 and single, if I had my choice I'd live in walnut creek

you have a BMW dealer in concord (2 freeway exits away), a nice ACTIVE downtown, (fun on weekends). I would also consider it an "upscale" neigborhood.

I'm moving from san ramon (about 10 miles south of WC) down to san jose both for work reasons (closer) and more nightlife options.

If walnut creek wasn't farther away from work than where I live now I'd consider it my first choice.

you may want to throw this or another post in the off topic section too, not many people frequent the CA forum (I just saw since I look at all new posts)

I agree with Ward in living on the other side of the hill (CoCo Country), You don't want to add to the traffic in our ghetto areas.

That's a good suggestion. A lot new development (condos) there with a lot of younger folks. However, at night, alot of the ghetto folks visit the shopping/movie theatre complex from around the area. A BMW dealership/service center is about 2 exits away.

Walnut Creek, like Ward suggested, is a really nice city. Very upscale with a nice combination of city life and large homes. An excellent area to settle down.

The commute during rush hours between Fremont and Oakland are pretty bad. You will hit a lot of traffic. I would suggest Hayward instead of Fremont in your case.

I am also 26, and single, and if I got a job in Oakland, I would find an apartment in Emeryville, because it is relatively close and you'll have a greater chance of finding a nice place. A lot of the apartments in Oakland are not in the best neighborhoods, and the nicer areas of Oakland typically have homes.

I think driving in SF is nuts...especially trying to find parking.
Try Walnut Creek or SF with Bart to Oakland?
SF will be the best nightlife scene!
You can also try Palo Alto

I would def. recommend emeryville. I recently moved back down to so cal from Emeryville about 2 months ago. I lived at the emerybay apt. on 6400 christie ave. You can get a nice 1 bedroom for around 1400 a month including parking. Gym and jacuzzi on site, 24 hour security. They are actually converting the units into condos for sale, so u can actually find short term leases deals. It would be a 3 month lease and then month to month from then on, but if they do decide to ask u to leave they give u a 3 month notice plus 1000 dollar incentive to help you move. It was a nice place and a great area. Lots of shopping and restaurants nearby, and less than half a mile to freeway access. 15 min drive to sf. 10 min drive to oakland. and weatherford BMW is less than a mile away.
Lots of other apts in the area too. But they can get pretty pricey. Especially if they have a view of the bay.

Walnut creek is nice too, but personally felt like it was too far from sf. And you really cant beat the weather in emeryville/oakland/berkeley area. Its not overcast all the time like SF but since its still by the water and not too inland, much cooler than walnut creek. Once u go more east (towards walnut creek) as soon as you pass the tunnel theres a 10 degree difference in temp. I loved emeryville, bright and sunny, but always cool...around 70 degrees.

I think you can tell...I miss it up there. haha. Goodluck on your apt. hunt.
