Flat tire warning scared me last night!

Driving home at 1:30 this morning, the red flat tire indicator light came on. I freaked out and pulled over at a gas station in the middle of the hood to check it out. The air pump didn't have a pressure gauge, so I put some air in every tire, reset the warning light, and drove home. The light didn't come back on the rest of the way home (30 more miles). Was it a glitch?

I would check the pressure in them still, reseting them needs to be done ONLY when they are properly inflated! You have no idea how low they might be....check the pressure, inflate them properly, and rest the tire pressure sensor again!

you can't very well tell if the system's not working without knowing the pressures in the tires.

Get a tire pressure gauge. Put it in your glove box. Check your tires every two weeks. The life you save might be your own.

First, as long as all four tires go down in pressure together you could be sitting on 4 flats and the system won’t catch it (2006). The system is not meant to replace normal care.

Second, even runflats can fail catastrophically if run too long with too little pressure. This is the dying part.

I checked the tire pressure today. The fronts were fine, but both back tires were down to 20 psi. I guess that's why the alert went off.

When was the last time you checked the pressure?

ummm, never. the car is three months old. with these runflats I'll have to be more diligent, since you get no visual indicators from the sidewall

you better put some air in those rear tires. 20 is definitely way below the recommended psi. put it to 36 at least. i put my rear w/ 36psi and the front w/ 32psi.

Yup, with the sport pkg, you should be around 32F/36R.

You're right. I was thinking 18" on the 330i. 29/32 is recommended for the 17" tires.

First, you should inflate your tires to the correct pressures. Then reset the flat tire monitoring system. I would also recommend getting your tires checked for nails or screws. I had one of my rear tires go down to about 25psi, and the dealer found a nail. I had the tire repaired as it only went down to 25psi for the 5 minutes before I filled the tire back to the correct pressure (I keep a pressure gauge in my armrest). Within 15 minutes of refilling the tire, it was repaired.

Wow, tonight the flat tire warning came on again! Once again, both rear tires were down to around 10 PSI! This is exactly two weeks from the first time it happened. I hope I don't have nails in both back tires. What else would cause this?

its probably a nail. Bring it to a shop and have it checked out/replaced/fixed and remember to make sure to check ur rims after for chips.

I took it to Discount Tire today, and there nails in both back tires.
They repaired one, but the other one was too close to the edge. Now I'll be out $300.
