comfort access/car wash experience

I was washing my car the other day and when I sprayed the drivers side door handle it would engage the locking mechanism. The lock would open and close repeatedly until I stopped spraying. I had the key fob in my pocket and was standing about 3-4 feet away. I thought this was a bit odd.

Anyone else experience this?

Considering you had the key within range and were applying constant pressure to the sensors via water, this seems normal?

Alway make sure the key fob is not on your body when you wash or work on the car.

Normal. Leave the key inside the car or out of range next time.

Leave it in your house or leave it inside the car.

Yup, this was happening to me too. I figured it out after a couple times and leave the fob on my work bench while washing.

Wouldn't this produce the same effect?

The car won't lock unless it senses a key outside next to the door.

There is a electric capacitive sensor in the handle. When water drips down the door cup, it changes the electric capacity field(or whatever it should be called). So the sensor thinks it was your hand and unlock the door when the key fob is present.

VTECaddict said it, but no. Leave the key inside the car when you wash it. That's what most of us do. For those brave enough to go to a car wash, put the key in the slot for when the attendants take the car.

I leave the plastic remote fob in my car when I was the car, and keep the metal key on me... The car shouldn't lock, but.... just in case...

Yeah, the first time it tripped me out too. I'm standing there spraying water on the car and the doors lock, I'm thinking, gee, that was weird, then the mirrors fold up and I'm wondering what gremlins are in my car. Second time it happened I figured the water was making the electrical connection to the door handle sensor.

In 3 years of (mostly) weekly washes, it's never happened to me. I suppose if it did, I'd use the second key. Do you have a second key fob? Or maybe you don't wash your car at home? Just wondering. I'm all for being prepared, but you may be taking it too far.
