Confirmed: Kubica to Renault 2010!

Next season Robert Kubica will be driving for Renault’s Formula One team. The 24 year old Pole and the BMW Sauber F1 Team have agreed on an early termination of their contract.

BMW Motorsport Director Mario Theissen said: “Robert played an important role for us – and certainly we did the same for him. He joined us in 2006 as a test driver with no Formula One experience, and then we promoted him to be one of our team’s drivers during that season. He never let us down and, with our first pole position in 2008 in Bahrain and first victory the same year in Canada, he set milestones in the history of our team. We are grateful for his strong and constant performances and wish him all the best for his future.“

Kubica himself commented: “I’m very thankful to those responsible in the BMW Sauber F1 Team for giving me the chance to get a Formula One cockpit. I think I justified the belief in me by delivering good results. In 2008 I managed to get the first pole position in Bahrain and the first win in Canada. Both will remain unforgettable moments for me. For 2010 I will have a new challenge. I wish everybody I worked with at the BMW Sauber F1 Team all the best for the future. I’m sure in the future our paths will cross in Formula One.”

Kubica drove his first Formula One race on the 6th August 2006 in Budapest. He competed in 55 Grand Prix for the BMW Sauber F1 Team, during which he achieved eight podium finishes and collected 129 championship points.

The team that will succeed the current BMW Sauber F1 Team will announce its driver line-up at a later stage.

Nothing surprising here. Just glad to have confirmation of the rumors we have heard for months around the paddock.

I think he is a better driver than most realize. He will flourish with Renault.

Best of luck Robert!!!
You gave the BMW supporters the best gift last year, a Race Win!!!
(despite that it cames with some luck that Hamilton rear-ended into Raikkonen...but hey...anything can happen in racing)

He is one of the best out there. Unfortunately, the same cannot be said for the Renault he'll be driving.

Interesting, see I thought the Renault team would be a step up for him from BMW, it's not Ferrari but still....

In a way it is. But BMW has powered back in the second half of the season compared to Renault. They've just had some engine reliability issues. Kubica in a McLaren or Ferrari would be a force to be reckoned with. I was simply stating that like Alonso, his skill would exceed his car's abilities.

The Renault sucks. Case in point, Alonso could not win in one this year. Being he is the most talented driver in the field and known for developing bad cars into winners. If Alonso had been driving the BMW this year, I have no doubts that BMW would have had several wins this year.

Next Q is are they going to sign quick...cough, cough...nick? That's the latest rumor, along with Kim to RedBullRacing, and a possible move from Vettel to McLaren for Mercedes engines. Of course, if you believe the rumors, Mercedes to leave McLaren and McLaren to buy BMW's facilities and engine program. Ah the silly season is upon us all. I look forward to logging on the various websites and see what is next...

What are you talking about? RBR is the only team that had already cemented their drivers for next season.

It's fitting that he would say that, as his Ferrari contract was supposed to last until the end of the 2010 season.

I thought that Vettel was one of the few drivers who've confirmed the team they'll be driving for next year? I was pretty sure he'll still be with Red Bull next year.

I think it's Webber that would be on the out....unless some brokering went on to secure Mercedes engines for RedBull and a swap to McLaren for Vettel....that's why I smile every morning logging onto the F1 sites to see what news has happened. After the Alonso announcement, there is going to be a lot of jockeying in the next couple of weeks. Heck, saw an article tonight where Peter Windsor may now be backing down from putting an American in an F1 seat next year.

He is. He resigned. He's young, and will probably win the WDC in the next two years. Red Bull is not going to let him go for anything.

Which he should. There is not a single US driver that is good enough or deserves an F1 ride.

Problem is not many US drivers have truly raced outside the US, which let's face it, is ignorant in the ways of open wheel road racing. Summerton is the best choice - he's won and podium in every series he's raced in, has not only European experience at the tracks, but world experience through two years in A1GP, and more importantly has shown he can win at that level. He's the all American kid and a corporate sponsor dream (ie, no worries about him pulling his weenie out at a bar - sorry Kimi - but I am still a fan). Just wish USF1 would better promote themselves. Heck I saw today where they finally got a "pic" on the website and that's it.

If US really wants an American driver in F1....they will need to do it in the long run....like the RedBull program....a group of young drivers starting nothing but open wheels racing....slowly gaining experience and move on to GP2.....

Yeah, we saw what the Red Bull quest for the next American F1 driver got us ... a very brief run of Scott Speed...where is he now?? I dunno.... In the words of Hagar..."don't be leaving me high and dry...again...."
