Custom Sub Enclosure Help
As I'm sure many of you have done, I've scoured the internet and boards looking for a nice sub enclosure that hides a sub relatively well and still allows for unhindered use of the trunk. Needless to say, I've been unhappy with the current (lack of) products out there. I've saved enough to do it custom, so I'm just gonna bite the bullet and build something clean. It means enough to me to drop a lil extra and have a nice system in my nice car. No more Mickey Mouse crap like I did in college.
Details: I have an '08 E90 335xi, so filling the spare tire area is a no go. Instead, I'd like to place a JL 12W6 (or 10W6 if I can't get enough volume for the 12) in the left side of the trunk between the wheel well and tail light (non battery side). Can anyone recommend a solid audio shop in SF or the Bay Area? I've investigated a few shops and they either couldn't build a fiberglass box, or I wasn't confident in their competence. Thanks, B |

I'm certainly not opposed to that. I was just thinking that I would be able to milk more volume out of the other side, if, for instance, I can even use a lil bit of the space underneath the plastic panel (where the cd changer would be). Because on the battery side, the plastic also houses the tow hitch and tools, which I don't really wanna get rid of. I'm just trying to maximize the volume because I know the W6 series subs need to move ALOT of air, especially in sealed enclosures. While we're on the subject, where was that enclosure in your pic built? I've seen it before, but seem to recall it being a one-off, rather than something mass produced that I could snag easily. |

I did a similar setup in my car after seeing that picture. Sadly my fiberglass skills lack! This was my attempt to the enclosure over the right rear wheel arch.

I used Zenclosures.
http://www.zenclosures.com They have a custom box for E90 and E92 with an amp mount. You can definitely get a 12W6v2 and a 500/1 well working and good looking in it. I have 2 Rockford Fosgate 12'' P2s in it running on Kenwood 7204 amplifier and it works great.

Thats a pic of my setup from my 135i. I do plan on getting started on a similar enclosure for the E9xs. That enclosure in my car has a depth of 7". I've made them for the JL W7s before which I believe require 8" depth, so it's definitely possible, it will just protrude out a bit more than pictured.

I have a IDMAX 12". Ill have to check the specs. My box now is perfect sealed size and has been since I built it years ago, I have no reason to do a new one except slight more function and aesthetics. It fits perfect in the trunk right now, wedged just perfect in there I dont need anything to even keep it in place. I only really use the trunk for luggage when I need and golf clubs and groceries. Other then that I have no need.
That all said (Larry David I hate you for this....hahaha, CURB rocks), if it would work out I would perhaps consider it, although its also money towards a tune, DP's, and angel eye upgrades, haha. Oh car modding...... |

bro, that is NICEEE... Im really interested in a setup EXACTLY like that. I currently have a much bigger box in my trunk, but since my e92 is my dd, it can get a bit annoying since I have sooo many things I drive around with all of the time. BTW how does it sound with that w7, I was thinking about putting the same sub in a box just like yours but I was not sure it would work out. The subs I am interested in putting in are 12" and 6.750"-7.250" deep, depending on which one I choose. Do you think it can be done without issues. send me a pm for the box built. Also how many watts are you running it on??

You can get a IDQ-12 and have as much output as the IDMAX with a smaller box and better SQ, it just wont go as low 35hz and down

Yea, mainly due to my power issue and it being vastly underpowered would be the guess, but it sounds sooo good right now, I dont want to mess anything up, haha. Thats the good thing, right now, I cant imagine it to sound any better over the whole spectrum, Im sure it can but it would be $$ I can spend in other places.
