I heard that the pre-production 335i coupes are being run around to all the dealers up here for the employees to try out and then BMW will crush them. Oh my!!!!

An employee at the BMW Store that test drove one of them last week. He said they don't have the necessary approvals. I have heard before about BMW crushing vehicles so this doesn't surprise me - it just hurts to hear it's going to be done.

Pretty normal for pre-production vehicles to get crushed. Good for tuners though since they are the cars that are usually given to them for extended loans. We usually can keep a car for 1-2 years before we have to return it back to the manufacturer for crushing. During that time, it is fully street legal, fully ensured, etc,. But its days are limited

Why does this bother any of you? They'll be crushed and recycled so that the material within can be reused in other cars. An abused prototype deserves no other fate - with the production models now available, the company has no use for them. Would it be better to let them sit in a yard, derelict?

they did this same thing to about a few dozen Audi RS4's that were brought to North America as pre-production test cars for dealers/magazines etc...

all for liability's sake I believe

exactly... this isn't odd to BMW. Every manufacturer does this with their pre-production vehicles. Sure a few may make it into some corporate museum to sit and collect dust; but the rest get turned to scrap metal.

*stupid sidenote: I hit post 335 in a thread about the 335i

they should just sell them as PART cars... and make $$$ back from them thats REAL recycling. mabey w/o the "abused" engine and tranny

my cousin works for chrysler and this is a common practice there as well. there are certain parts of the car that can be salvaged, however.
