330i versus 330d!!
This is quite a good article...even if it is from an American magazine - "Car and Driver"

Nice article and thanks for posting. I think its great that both tastes are catered for in the 330 and 330d Both are probably top of their class for each fuel and type of car. They aint wrong about that engine note above 5,000 rpm on the 330i ... it is It is not an engine ... its a freakin musical instrument You have gotta admire the D economy with the performace it returns though |

My 530d was 'just' the old 218 bhp one - even so it was a quick car and it really gave me an appreciation of the ability of the 3.0l diesels. The key to me was the engagement part - the 330d is quick - even when you are being lazy. The 330i is very slightly quicker - but you have to put some effort in to experience it. Plus the soundtrack is better in the 330i (although the diesel doesn not sound bad at all). I wanted a manual gearbox - to get that engagement and I wanted petrol for the same reason. Are these things worth the additional fuel cost? That's the big question. For me they are (at least for a bit), but if Alpina bring out a 3.0l D3 - maybe not. The other factor for me was DMS tuning. If I could have a manual DMS tuned 330d I would be there in a flash (or a manual 335d for that matter). When the 335d starts hitting the streets we will see a lot of articles about diesel coming of age. |

I agree, it was a hard decision for me to go for another diesel after the 530d -but the mileage I do makes it hard to justify a petrol motor...at the moment anyway. i do miss the sound of the straight 6. I drive the wifes car now and again (E46 320ci sport) nice car nice sound - just not enough power to have fun with though!
My 330d Sport is long overdue a trip to the west coast of Scotland (near where I come from) for a good "blat" on some great roads! I watched the BBC Top Gear video last night of Clarkson driving the 535d round the track - it is a quick car....can not wait to try that engine in an E90! Got the first oil change tommorow morning - 18k - not bad for a diesel!

The 535d is based on the old 218 bhp used in the first e60 530d's. The 335d is based on the new 231 bhp lightweight aluminium engine with piezzo electric ignition used in the current 330d and 530d. The 335d is going to be a LOT quicker than the 535d - in fact it's probably going to be quicker than the 335i and the 550i. In short it's going to be a little monster. That's BEFORE you get it tuned by DMS |

I wondered about the engine set up on the 35 engine - thanks for clearing that one up. My 530d was (like yours) the 218 BHP motor and the new 231BHP motor as I have in my 330d is a far superior engine, quieter, smoother and of course quicker!
I am tempted with the 335d...but with my financial head on I really need to keep my 330d for a year at least....but with my blokes head I want one now! Does the 335d give a paddle shift option?

335d is auto only due to the massize torque, and running through the car configurator it shows a sports steering wheel with gearshift paddles as standard equipment.

I would love a 335d - I seriously think it's going to be the ultimate 3 series. Mind you paddle shift is going to be more fun than step .. hmmmn .. if only it was DSG or SMG rather than automatic with paddles I'd be in. The story is that the torque is too much for the manual box - but surely there are manual boxes in cars with ridiculous torque (e.g. TVR cerbera speed 6 is a manual isn't it?). |

I remember an article in a magazine once that compared 530d with 535d and asked the question whether the extreme version was actually a better car as an all rounder than the higher powered more expensive version - or maybe it was just better value? Anyway, I've done 3.5k in my 330d Se now and can honestly say that I don't crave a 335d (or a 330i) based on experience to date. I would like the look of the Sport but I'm not sure I'd want the stiffness - and I do like the dicrete performance it gives.
Actually, if I'm honest I can't think of anything I would rather have as my daily driver - probably the ultimate compliment from someone who swaps his car afr too often! |

The 335d being based on the 231 hp engine will re-open that gap. Of course we all want different things in cars ! The decision tree for me was a bit like this: Sports suspension: yes don't even think about it - the stiffer and lower the better Manual or Auto: MANUAL - I'm driving and I'm changing the gears..... Petrol or Diesel: Diesel ... no petrol ..... no diesel ... OK maybe petrol .... oh bugger ..... Head and heart argue for some days .... OK petrol and I'll try not to think about it anymore |

Mine was more like this...
Diesel or diesel? go on then, diesel.... Sport or SE - HOW MUCH more is the sport to lease? buggar that, SE is more comfortable (and I can't afford Sport) - SE it is... Manual or auto - not giving tax man more money for driving an auto - manual then.... 320 or 330 - you are only young once - and when I was I did the right thing. Now I'm going to enjoy..... |

I wanted to buy the 330d at first, but the yearly cost of a 335d in Belgium is only 300 EUR higher with the 330d (consumption not included). I only hope the steptronic isn't a let down ... I called my dealer today and they got a 325i at the garage, and he confirmed me I could test drive a 335d pretty soon at the main BMW center. |

Nope. My dealer asked if I wanted to delete the paddles but you don't get £100 discount. Also if you look at the info below you can see offical difference in MPG between the 330D & 335D (when both in Auto mode) is pretty tiny. 330D ~ 335D 28.2 ~ 27.4 Urban 47.9 ~ 47.9 extra Urban 38.2 ~ 37.7 Combined 197 ~ 200 CO2 In most cars I have tended to acheive a figure between the Combined & extra urban on my daily 90 mile drive..so I hopefully I might see 40MPG unless the roads are very clear Report back early Oct

There isn't much between a 330i and a 330d over a 1/4 mile drag. In real world use the 330d will probably be quicker because it's driver will be in the right gear. The 535d can worry a 545i and is definitely quicker than a 530i. Hence my suspicion that the improved 335d is going to seriously challenge the 335i. |

I am with you on that. I think the 335d will give similar if not better mid range performance than the 335i...am sure there will be some forthcoming articles in a few car mags.

To bad I really want the M-tech package with it ... I can order my E92 with it, but it will arriving around march / april. Needforspeed ... you mention you like a low & stiff suspension. So do I, but how is a beemer regarding rattles, squeaks, etc? I currently drive an Alfa GT (standard suspension which is pretty hard), and the rattles and squeaks (and there are a LOT) are the reason why I'm selling it. |

You cannot compare an Alfa to a BMW Alfa's are known for great engines but not so great build quality. There are no rattles or squeaks with the M Sport mate Just sweet sweet firm & supple handling, with a great low ride height / stance ... loving the M SPORT package |

I think NFS means that he opted for the 330i as fuel consumption or cost was not a consideration in buying the car. He just the 330i straight six performance, soundtrack and engaging drive ... exactly the same critera as me. M SPORT 330i is just |
