Steering column replaced

Had my steering column replaced due to a notchy feel at full lock.

Anyone else had this done?

can you define "notchy"? do you mean the steering wheel does not turn smoothly?

Mine too. After 45000km. I had problem with the electrical locking system and there was a metallic noise there when I tried to turn left or right with the car stopped. The dealer told me that it is common for this specific part to be replaced in E46 and E90. I hope that this will never happen after the warranty expires.

When parking etc - the wheel felt as though it hesitated then was ok again - as if a bearing was on its way out (had dirt in etc)

I'm not saying that was why it was replaced but thats what it felt like. Ok when driving at speed due to the smaller travel of the wheel.

Hmm...at least it's fixed now, Paul.

Did the dealer agree with you straight away, about there being a problem, or did you have to go some way to 'proving' it, before they would do anything?

They were spot on Viv - really good. I had taken it in once before and they did something with the fluid?

I've had it done..

When turning the wheel, either when standing still or at parking speed
the column felt that it had a catch half way through the motion.

Strangely it was intermittent but fortunately when I took it to the dealer it did it again. Oddly I felt that it was aircon use related too; i.e I noticed that it did it when the aircon had been on for a while. Either way I was a bit unhappy that it needed to be done especially as when I went to pick the car up it still did it.

The dealer then kept the car for 5 days and gave it a lot of attention. not a dicky bird since.
